Resolved: "not eligible for Gemini Code Assist" was actually 403 VALIDATION_REQUIRED — IDE never shows the verification URL

TL;DR — The “not eligible” screen was misleading. The backend returns 403 VALIDATION_REQUIRED
(account security verification) and the IDE receives a validation_url but never surfaces it, so the
user is stuck. Opening that URL manually and completing the verification fixed the account.

Environment: Antigravity IDE 2.5.5 (macOS 15.8, Apple M1 Max), personal Google account,
country: Vietnam (which is on the supported list).

On the UI side the IDE only shows “Your account is not eligible for Gemini Code Assist for
individuals at this time”, and auth.log logs
Error confirming user for service: Your account is not eligible….

Timeline on this machine: worked through 2026-09-24 (session with signedIn, zero
VALIDATION_REQUIRED), broke on the next launch 2026-09-26 — consistent with the reports here since
2026-09-24. Counts in the broken sessions: 52 × PERMISSION_DENIED (403), 16 × VALIDATION_REQUIRED,
12 × “not eligible”, 32 sign-in attempts.

Workaround that resolved it:

  1. Sign out of the IDE.
  2. Extract metadata.validation_url from the newest ls-main.log.
  3. Open that URL in a browser signed into the same Google account and complete the verification
    (the resulting page confirms authorization for Gemini Code Assist / Cloud Code with Gemini Code
    Assist / Gemini CLI / Antigravity).
  4. Sign in again → the IDE then calls v1internal:loadCodeAssist and
    v1internal:fetchAvailableModels successfully and works.

Product bug worth fixing: when the backend returns VALIDATION_REQUIRED, the IDE should surface
metadata.validation_url (open it, or show it as a button) instead of an eligibility error. Today the
required step is invisible to the user, which is why so many people are stuck. There is a related
report in a third-party client: code-yeongyu/oh-my-openagent issue #1761.

Also noticed: the in-app updater did not change the installed build —
CFBundleShortVersionString stayed at 2.5.5 with the bundle unchanged since 2026-08-13, while
~/Library/Caches/antigravity-updater/ holds a stale update.zip + pending/ from months earlier.
Worth checking; the current GA build for macOS arm64 would be good to confirm.
