Trying to generate my first API Key, getting an error stating that it is not available in my region (I am in the UK) or I am under 18 (correct DOB in my google account, unfortunately I am over 18!), I select generate API Key option and it thinks about it, loads what looks like the page to setup the name and get the key, but then very quickly at the bottom you see “account not supported” followed by “list models failed” and it then redirects me to the page informing me my region is not correct etc. stuck at this first hurdle. Tried Chrome, Edge, in normal and private modes.
Hey Eric,
Same for me. Still haven’t found a fix or a way to hear back from support about this. Really frustrating!
hi,
same here, I’m from Poland and have 18+ years . Can’t generate API key ![]()
No support or information on this as yet… I had to use an fresh account to get around the problem. Two logins a pain but I did get something working after generating an API Key. Need to compare the difference between the working account and the non-working account. The working account has less details than the working one. I think it might be to do with the @gmail.com domain ; the working account uses the @gmail.com account, non working is a google account against my own email address.
Hi Eric & Zenek,
I’ve recently solved the issue - my problem was that my age hadn’t been verified properly. More info can be found here myaccount.google. com/age-verification
Good luck, hope it helps you both ![]()
Thanks for the update.
This worked

same issue here. Randomly started today. Access in Philippines
Same issue here. It worked before, and now both the API (via VSCode) and the web interface stopped working.
Web interface first says “failed to list models” and then when typing into the chat it says “failed to count tokens”.
Location is Switzerland.
Same here. This is happening again and again, totally unpredictable. One moment you work, the other you’re being kicked out.
SOLUTION: Google requires age verification for certain services, including the Gemini API. Users may not be able to access these services if they have an inaccurate date of birth (DOB) in their Google account.
Steps:
- Make sure you’re logged into your browser (chrome)
- Click on your profile
- Click on ‘Manage your google account’
- Click on ‘Personal info’
- Fix your Birthday if it is inaccurate
- Verify Your Age
- Select an option to verify your age, (ID seems to be verified quickly, at least in my experience)
- Go to Android Studio (latest) and select Gemini on the right hand side of the panel
- Click on add/get/generate api, which will take you to google ai studio
- click on get started or create api key – follow the prompts
- you will need to create a project or use existing one if you have
- give your api key a name create the key – copy — and plug in the key into android studio.
