One of my chat window with a long chat history wouldn’t work any more. I noticed the behaviour in last couple of days. The chat window opens but the Token counter at the top, next to the chat title just spins around. It wouldn’t show the numbers. The prompt run button is not enabled until the token count is loaded. Hence the window has become unusable. I can not access the context which is necessary for content generation because of this nor can I use it for content generation. I have seen the same for a few other chat window that has a longer chat history and hence likely high token count. Where as a fairly new window with relatively smaller token count works upto 4 digit number!
Any one else is facing this and have resolved it? If so, how?
What is the best way to externalise the context necessary to generate the content to avoid this from happening ? Its not only the context its the other historically generated content
AI Studio runs entirely in your browser. As your chat history grows, the browser has to render and manage an increasingly large number of elements in the user interface. Also chat history gets stored in your google drive associated with your account.
Please clear your cache memory in browser and see if your storage in google drive is full.
I have token counts close to 100K in my account and it never gave issues as I keep freeing-up browser memory and gdrive.
It is a good practice to have lower context windows for seemless usage. If you are still facing throttling issues, instead of letting the conversation grow indefinitely, periodically ask Gemini to summarize the key points, decisions, and important information from the chat so far. Then open a new chat and enter the summary. This keeps the token count low while preserving the essential information.

I think you should all come out and say that this issue is unfixable, it has been 2 months. It is a beta product so your consumers will understand, just be honest if its an easy or difficult thing to fix
I checked AI Studio on my end, and it appears to be working as expected. I tested a chat with a nearly 5-digit token count (31K+), and the counter loaded correctly for me.
Could you please share a screenshot or a screen recording of the spinning token counter? This would help us better understand what is happening.
Já me deparei com isso! Não sei se com vc tá a mesma coisas com o botão run ctrl. O meu também acontecia isso ele contava os tokens mas não enviava meu prompt eu removia meu prompt e nada até aí só. Ele tava completamente travado. 100 mil tokens não é relativamente grande eu to trabalhando com 400 mil e ta “ótimo” a unica coisa ruim é a lentidão. E pela data que voce menciona, 4 de novembro foi mais ou menos o tempo que ocorreu comigo então vocÊ não é o unico. Acredito que isso já foi corrigido. Alternativa: se você tiver um resumo do que foi escrito abre outra janela e faça o seguinte:

Cole o System Instructions no local certo

before the bug happened around mid october the original chat instance had about 700k tokens in before being like this.
changing the media res settings does work but it’s tedious and the token counter is probably inaccurate as to how much the chat really is taking up. as said, after the bug happened, the token count with medium/high resolution is like 150k when before the bug it sat at a consistent 600k
i also made copies of this via javascript and the conventional method and even tried with the same topic from scratch. that new chat was set at high resolution and immediately started not loading after 150k tokens. fiddling with the resolution makes it work but still.
again, the issue is not fixed for me. it’s clear that the ui has been absolutely bugged and google doesn’t know how to fix it or cant be bothered to
update: my chats are officially not saveable
token counter warps from 772k to 1.1m and back down to 500k something each time i reload the tab and fiddle with understanding / media resolution settings
I get that it’s a beta product and that it’s never meant to be used in this manner, but it wasn’t this unstable before oct 2025.
