[BUG] Critical Bug: Unsupported File Type for DOCX/XLSX Upload in Playground

Hello Google AI Studio Team and Community,

I am reporting a critical bug related to file uploads in the AI Studio Playground, specifically concerning the handling of Microsoft Office document types.

Context of the Problem:
Users often need to upload various document types to the AI Studio prompt for processing by Gemini models. I attempted to upload .docx (Word) and .xlsx (Excel) files.

Observed Behavior (Steps to Reproduce):

  1. In the AI Studio Playground, I clicked the ‘+’ button to initiate a file upload (orange circle in Figure 1).
  2. From the dropdown menu, I selected either “Drive” (red box in Figure 1) to choose a file from Google Drive, or “Upload a file” (blue box in Figure 1) to upload from my local machine.
  3. I then selected a .docx or .xlsx file for upload (e.g., “Um Guia de Firmw…” DOCX file, shown with a red arrow in Figure 2, which was available in “Meu Drive”).
  4. Expected Outcome: The file should be uploaded and made available for the prompt, or a clear message explaining supported types should appear before selection.
  5. Actual Outcome: The platform displays an explicit error message: “Unsupported file type selected.” (orange box in Figure 3).
  6. This error occurs consistently for .docx and .xlsx files, regardless of the upload method (Drive or direct upload).
  7. Other common file types, such as .txt, .pdf, and .jpeg, upload and work without issues. This indicates the problem is specific to Office document formats.
  8. My files are not corrupted or blocked from my end.

UX/UI Analysis:
This is a significant functional limitation and a UX failure related to ‘Error Prevention’ and ‘Visibility of System Status’ (Nielsen’s Heuristics).

  • Lack of Upfront Guidance: The system allows the selection of an unsupported file type without prior warning. The error appears after the user’s action, causing frustration and wasted effort.
  • Inconsistent Behavior: In a Google ecosystem, users expect a reasonable level of support for common document formats, which are frequently used for storing information. The lack of support for DOCX/XLSX feels inconsistent with typical Google product capabilities.
  • Inefficient Workflow: Users are forced to manually convert their .docx or .xlsx files to .pdf or .txt before they can be used in the AI Studio, adding unnecessary steps and friction to their workflow.
  • Generic Error Message: While “Unsupported file type selected” is somewhat clear, it doesn’t offer guidance on which file types are supported, or how the user might convert their file.

Suggestion of Improvement:

  • Option Standard: Expand Supported File Types & Proactive Guidance:

    • Ideal Solution: Implement support for common Microsoft Office document formats (.docx, .xlsx, and potentially .pptx) to align with common user workflows and reduce friction.
    • If Not Fully Supported: Clearly communicate the list of supported file types within the upload modal or as a tooltip next to the upload button, before the user attempts selection.
    • Improved Error Message: If an unsupported file is selected, the error message should be more helpful, e.g., “Unsupported file type (.docx). Please upload files in TXT, PDF, or JPEG format, or convert your document before trying again.”
  • Option Alternative: Internal Conversion with Disclaimer:

    • Allow users to upload .docx and .xlsx files, but inform them that these files will be internally converted to text (e.g., for model processing) and that some formatting might be lost. This provides functionality while managing expectations.

Impact on User:
Users experience significant frustration and wasted time due to forced manual file conversions. This reduces workflow efficiency, limits the types of data that can be easily fed to the models, and creates a perception of the platform being less capable or user-friendly than expected, potentially leading to lower adoption or satisfaction.

Thank you for your attention to this feedback.

Best regards,

Hello. It seems I’m still unable to upload any Word docs to Google Drive. Is there a timeframe for when this will be resolved?

Hey. I want to circle back to this post and see if there are any updates with Drive not converting Word documents.

@deven_7 infelizmente ainda estou com o mesmo problema. O Excel e PowerPoint também são afetados então deduzi que algo relacionado ao pacote Office dentro do ai studio deve ter algo errado.

Okaaaaayyyyy…..? I had to translate this, but I get the idea. I just decided to upload PDF documents instead.
