I am writing to report an issue with uploading .docx and .doc files in Google AI Studio. I am currently unable to upload these file types from either my local storage or Google Drive.
Previously, I was able to successfully upload .docx and .doc files directly from my Google Drive, a feature that was extremely helpful for my workflow. However, this functionality has recently stopped working. The inability to work with these common document formats directly is a significant inconvenience.
Restoring the ability to upload these files, especially from Google Drive, would be a great improvement and would be much appreciated.
I see that when I previously uploaded a .docx file via Google Drive, it was automatically converted to PDF on Google Drive, and that PDF was then sent to the chat. Now, it simply states that the format is not supported
However, I tested it and manually converted the .docx file to a PDF myself, and then uploaded that PDF via Google Drive, and this works. I assume there is some sort of issue within AI Studio regarding the automatic conversion of .docx to PDF. It seems that this conversion feature might be working for you, but it is currently failing for me.
Looks like I’m experiencing the same issue now. I’m attempting to upload articles in a .doc format and the error coming up states, “Conversion failed.” I tried multiple browsers and devices and I’m receiving the same error.

When I try to upload a .docx file from Google Drive into AI Studio, this message appears. The .docx file doesn’t even start loading or get attached. Also, .xlsx files from Google Drive cannot be inserted either; it displays the message “Unsupported file type selected.” And locally, it was never possible to send any of these files anyway.
If you look at my Google Drive history, both .xlsx and .docx files were always duplicated when I uploaded them to AI Studio. This means that when I sent a .xlsx or .docx file, a conversion to PDF was happening, and that PDF was attached to the chat. Currently, this duplication and conversion is not occurring, and I only receive the “Unsupported file type selected” message. However, I believe there is a workaround: I can simply convert the file to PDF myself and then upload it to AI Studio.
