The Gemini 2.5 Pro odel says it can read docx files, but when I try to upload them I get thsi error:

We could reproduce your issue on AI studio. But I believe the document you might be refering is Gemini app documentation which support docx file type.
For AI studio, the correct document to refer would Gemini API documentation, unfortunately docs file type is not yet supported.
