File uploads restricted

Salutations. Recently, the little circular “+” button next to the run button has changed to this

Screenshot 2025-12-17 at 5.36.32 AM.

It has happened multiple times during the past week or so, but only intermittently. When it happens, I can’t upload most file types. Some file types are unaffected; such as png, pdf and md files.

Is this happening because I’ve reach some sort of limit? Or is this a bug? I am currently on the paid tier.

Hi @tocyen , Thanks for reaching out to us.

could you please provide the specific file types that are being restricted for you?

And thank you for the rapid response @Sonali_Kumari1 !

At present, I am seeing several file types that are being restricted: txt, py, json, jsx. This list is not exhaustive.

Curiously, if I change ‘format’ from “All Supported Types” to “All Files”, I can upload the aforementioned file types; but only one at a time.

I’ve encountered the same problem. About eight or nine hours ago, uploading .docx files was working fine. Then, after an hour, it kept giving me the error message “unsupported file type selected.” I tried uploading .docx files on my classmate’s computer, and it gave the same error. About half an hour later, it uploaded normally again, but then stopped working again. Just now, I tried uploading .docx files with my Android phone, and it still gave the same error. So it shouldn’t be related to the computer or phone model; it’s a problem with this feature. Also, yesterday afternoon, I used Gemini 3 Pro Preview to create a lab report. I didn’t finish the report, and before creating it, I enabled the feature to save the conversation to Google Drive. But this afternoon, I can’t find the conversation record anywhere, and there’s no file related to that conversation in my Google Drive. This is very strange, and it’s undoubtedly a huge blow to me because I need to spend more time getting a new conversation to understand what the previous lab report contained and what I need it to write next. So I hope you can investigate what the cause is. Thank you very much.(windows:Chrome Android: Chrome 140.0.7339.207)

Same issue for me. Is this being looked at? I am not able to do most of my work because of this issue. This is the second time it happened in a matter of 10 days!

@Sonali_Kumari1 Same 1MB limit issue affecting CSV files.

For me, it’s .py files that won’t upload as of like an hour ago. It also seems to default to Custom files when I try to search for the file I want to upload. I have to switch to all files, select the py file and click open, and then I get the 1mb file restriction message. I’ve tried with and without paid API and both failed. I’m using Opera browser.

Get ready for enshittification next year with the ‘New and Improved’ AI Studios where they merge it with Pro subscriptions and you’ll be pushed to it. The wild era is OVER. The government dole has run out.

The same thing is happening to me. This is the second or third time in two weeks. It is very frustrating, and I cannot understand why this is happening. It’s obviously not a question of file type restrictions, since – as was mentioned before – if I switch the file browser console to ‘all files,’ I can upload all types, but only one at a time. The most critical part of this is that we are not notified before such a limitation is imposed. I hope someone responsible at Google is working on a solution as soon as possible. I would highly appreciate it.
It is that little ‘+’ sign right to the prompt text area that changed from a circular icon to this rectengular add_document icon.

Has nobody heard any response on this yet? I’m still unable to upload any .py or txt files over 1mb! I even tried to upload a ZIP file that was only 230kb and that ALSO failed and it said unsupported file type. I’m just trying finish some edits on a python script and I can’t do it without Gemini! No other LLM is capable of helping me on this due to context token limits. I would even be willing to pay if needed. It’s just so messed up that they would pull the rug out from under my feet like this by imposing such restrictions with no warning or anything!!!

It’s context window is completely broken. It won’t take files I have that are roughly 100,000 tokens, nor can it hold all of the code in memory when I split it up into smaller chunks and upload them individually. I’m on the paid version of Pro and it simply cannot handle more than seemingly 25,000 - 50,000 tokens now, despite advertising the ability to handle up to a million.

It’s basically false advertising at this point and I’m canceling my subscription and moving on to a different model. Google absolutely dropped the ball here. I was very excited when Gemini 3 came out and it was superb for perhaps a week, but now it’s entirely unusable for anything beyond making a funny picture or a crappy poem.

This issue has nothing to do with account tier — I have a paid subscription and I am experiencing exactly the same problems. What I find truly unacceptable is the lack of clear and timely communication. While this is obviously not a matter of life and death and I am perfectly capable of coding without AI assistance, we are living in an era where professional software development increasingly happens side by side with AI tools.

I am deliberate about how I write code, and my workflow is explicitly built around Google AI Studio and Gemini. When these tools are unreliable or repeatedly unavailable without proper explanation, it directly disrupts established development practices. If this level of quality and this frequency of issues persist, I will have no real alternative but to move my work — and my subscription — to other LLM providers.

Reliability and communication are not optional at this point; they are fundamental expectations for tools positioned as professional development infrastructure.

Having to change the ‘format’ from “All Supported Types” to “All Files” to upload basic files like txt, py, json, etc. it is very annoying; and even more so the fact that you can only upload one file at a time… I hope they solve it soon

Looks like google developers are doing vibe coding and pushing it to production without proper testing. lol.

I desperately need this fix. @Google_Google

Meanwhile, we finally got a brand-new, long-awaited feature: Let It Snow.
I honestly don’t know how I ever used AI Studio without this incredibly useful function…

This post was temporarily removed because one (or more) forum members flagged it. I assume—and I understand—that some people may have found this cynicism on my part uncomfortable. If I offended anyone by calling the “let it snow” visualization kitsch a useless development, I apologize to them.

That said, I stand by my opinion, which is particularly important precisely because we all know that AI-assisted systems and LLMs are receiving an increasingly broad focus in this world. Within this framework, it is indeed orders of magnitude more important—at least in my view—that core functionalities (such as file uploads) work properly than having snowflakes on the screen.

The original problem, therefore, still has not been resolved. I will only add quietly that one of the reasons we cannot enjoy snowfall in reality in some of the less fortunate regions of the world is that, in our great rush (among other things due to the gigantic server capacities that power AI), we consume such an enormous amount of energy that demonstrably contributes to warming the planet called Earth.

It is true that my own prompts are part of this as well, so the criticism applies to me just as much as to anyone else.

I will not pursue the fatal limitations of Google AI Studio any further, because in the meantime I have found an acceptable alternative among assisted development tools, and life goes on, as I wrote earlier. I only regret that for me it is no longer with Google. Please don’t tag this post; there’s no need. I will be leaving the forum.
