URGENT: Complete Project Loss in AI Studio - Drive Backup Failed

Hello everyone,

I am facing a severe data loss issue with Google AI Studio. I created a project app starting at 3:30 PM IST yesterday, and it suddenly vanished from the ‘Your Apps’ list around 10:30 PM IST.

Key Findings:

  1. AI Studio: Project is missing from the dashboard.

  2. Google Drive: The Drive’s Trash is empty, and the ‘Google AI Studio’ folder is missing the project file. Only an empty applet_access_history.json file remains.

  3. Action: I have already submitted a detailed bug report via the in-app feedback tool.

Is anyone else experiencing this complete project loss where even the Drive backup has failed? Any guidance or known workarounds would be greatly appreciated. I am waiting for support response, but looking for community input as well.

Hi @gitmod-cod ,

Welcome to the Forum!
Please check your browser history for aistudio.google.com to locate the direct URL to the project. If the page loads, save your work immediately. Additionally, try logging out and logging back in to AI Studio to refresh the session.

Hey,

Hope you’re keeping well.

It sounds like the project data is no longer linked between AI Studio and its associated Drive storage. First, check if the project is still listed under any other Google account you might have used, as AI Studio apps are tied to the account they were created with. In Google Drive, try searching by keyword or file type rather than folder browsing, since AI Studio may store files in hidden or non-obvious locations. If nothing turns up, the only recovery path will be through Google’s internal support, so keep your bug report reference ID handy and follow up via Google Cloud Support. For critical projects in the future, consider exporting app data manually from AI Studio to a local backup or another Cloud Storage bucket to avoid reliance on only Drive sync.

Thanks and regards,
Taz

Copie e cole do notepad ++pra o prompt de uma nova janela

E demorado mais vc recupera.

Se você é programador é mais fácil

I am experiencing the same class of issue, and I want to confirm that this is not an isolated incident.

In my case:

  • The app still appears in AI Studio → Build → Your apps with correct name and description.

  • Any attempt to open or run the app results in “Page not found”.

  • The original /apps/drive/{resourceId} preview URL is no longer accessible.

  • In Google Drive, the actual app project file is missing, and only metadata artifacts (such as applet_access_history.json) remain.

This strongly suggests that:

  • The runtime / preview layer has been removed or invalidated,

  • while Drive-linked metadata was preserved, leaving users with “ghost apps” that appear to exist but are not runnable.

This is particularly concerning because:

  • There is no migration warning,

  • no export mechanism for app logic,

  • and no indication in the UI that the app is no longer recoverable.

In my case, I was only able to recover because I had:

  • a prior JSON data export, and

  • a separately deployed Cloud Run version of the app.

Without those, the project would have been a total loss.

I strongly recommend the AI Studio team:

  1. Clearly label apps whose runtime has been deprecated or removed.

  2. Provide an official export / migration path for existing apps.

  3. At minimum, warn users before invalidating preview or runtime endpoints.

Happy to provide resource IDs, timestamps, or reproduction details if helpful.

Hello @zhongda_zheng

We truly appreciate you flagging this issue, we have already filed a bug internally.

I created my first ever app using Gemini. It’s a simple app with URL: [birthday-wishes-friendships-503814396208.us-west1 run app]birthday-wishes-friendships-503814396208.us-west1 run app/) and while i was logged in all the time, i am unable to edit/modify the app now. The app was deployed but it doesn’t appear in my AI studio, i do not see any residual files in my Google drive associated with this project. The input file for this project also needs to be stored on Google drive and luckily it is still accessible. but, I am unable to edit/modify this app. please help! this experience is so frustrating for a newbie non-techie who’s just exploring tools across cloud platforms.

@Mahima_Garg tudo bem? Achei interessante seu projeto.

I too lost my project yesterday, I clicked save and poof project gone. I still have the direct link to it but when clicked the page is empty. The folder in my Google drive is empty. Is there a way the support team or the devs can search the project name and see if it’s still there?

Oh no…. one of my wife’s project is appeared on the App list. However, when she clicked on the URL, it replied page not found… She had put her work on this App for few days…. Is there any way to get the project back?!
