Upgrade to continue your flow

I am completely stuck in the “Upgrade to continue your flow” loop in AI Studio.

I have a valid API key attached to an active Google Cloud Pay-as-you-go billing account. When the upgrade prompt appears, my key is already listed. The “Select key” button is greyed out, and I only have the options to “Unlink” or “Change.” However, when I close the modal, the AI Studio agent still treats me as a Free Tier user and refuses to generate code.

Troubleshooting already attempted:

  • Confirmed the API key is correctly added to the App Secrets tab.

  • Toggled the “Save paid API key” switch on and off.

  • Hard refreshed the browser/cleared session state.

  • Tried linking the key globally in settings rather than just the project workspace.

Nothing works. This is a complete blocker for development right now. Any updates on a timeline for a fix would be hugely appreciated!

I am experiencing the same issue and hope it gets resolved soon. I am using both a Google AI Pro monthly subscription and a Pay-As-You-Go billing account. However, once a certain daily limit is exceeded, I receive the error messages “Encountered retryable error from model provider: Agent execution terminated due to error.” and “Upgrade to continue your flow”. After this occurs, I am completely unable to use AI Studio until the next day.

Hi, one thing I did do was sign out/sign back in again and since then I have not had any further issues. worth a try if you have not tried that already. be nice to get an official update that the issues have been resolved.

It worked for me at least for now.

Try clearing cache if some one is still having issues after signing out and signing in again.

I’ve cleared cache, tried incognito, tried a completely different browser. Still won’t let me proceed with pay per request

Happening for me.
Tried logging out, sometimes works for 1 or 2 requests, then blocks again. Different devices, same result.

what error message are you getting ? Can you share that with screenshot is possible ?
