Cannot Link AI Studio to Gemini API

In Google AI Studio, it says I’ve reached my limit for the day:

Upgrade to continue your flow

You’ve reached your limit for the day, you can wait for it to reset or upgrade to continue and unlock even more.

But once I hit “Continue to Upgrade”, select “Gemini API”, and link my API key, it doesn’t let me continue. It throws the same error each time I try to input a prompt.

Same here, despite having an API key, I keep getting these messages. It’s incredibly annoying.

Same. It looks like they’re trying to force us into a monthly paid subscription (at $19.99/mo). Would have been nice to know this was coming. I’d prefer not to do monthly if I’m only using it occasionally. I just need to get through the current project. I have a paid API key set and it’s been working fine until today.

Found a workaround! I had been struggling for a few days with this… Instead of selecting the api key on the chat window modal, go to project settings (top right cog wheel), and select the paid API key on the Chat tab… it reads your paid one!

Hi @NicolasRobertson / @evanoc / @Donald_B -

Have you tried clicking “unlink” and relinking, or clicking a previous point in the stepper to choose a key from another project?

Let me know if that was the confusion.

I am experiencing the same issue and hope it gets resolved soon. I am currently using both a Google AI Pro monthly subscription and a Pay-As-You-Go billing account. However, once a certain daily limit is exceeded, I receive the error messages “Encountered retryable error from model provider: Agent execution terminated due to error.” and “Upgrade to continue your flow”. After this occurs, AI Studio becomes completely unusable until the next day. Unfortunately, having a paid subscription does not prevent this problem. Furthermore, the suggested workaround—going to project settings (top right cog wheel) and selecting the paid API key on the Chat tab—did not resolve my issue either. Would upgrading to the Ultra plan make a difference?

In my case, I was able to click the “Back to start” button in the top left. Then back into Apps and when I checked the Chat Settings (gear upper right) it had switched back to paid plan and continued working.
