Unable to activate Gemini API billing — prepayment setup error

Hello Google AI Studio Support,

I created a new Google AI Studio project and generated an API key. However, the project shows:

  • Billing tier: Activate billing
  • Project status: Make payment / Prepay required
  • Rate limit page: Project quota tier unavailable

When I click “Activate billing,” I get this error:

“Something went wrong. We’re working to restore it as quickly as possible. Please close the window and try again in a few minutes.”

I tried again in Chrome Incognito, but the same error occurs.

Could you please check whether there is a billing or prepayment setup issue with my project and advise how to enable Gemini API access?

Could you please confirm if you are still facing this error when clicking Activate billing? If the issue persists, please share your Project ID along with a browser network recording (HAR file) so we can inspect the underlying request and error response:

  1. In Google AI Studio, open Developer Tools by pressing F12 (or right-click anywhere on the page and select Inspect).
  2. In the Developer Tools panel, switch to the Network tab.
  3. Check the Preserve log checkbox.
  4. Reproduce the issue by clicking Activate billing (or triggering the error).
  5. Once the error appears, right-click anywhere in the list of network requests and select Save all as HAR with content (or click the Export HAR download icon).
  6. Share the saved .har file and your Project ID with us here (or via private message).
