I wanted to bring up something I’ve noticed with the Google Ai chat library and see if others have experienced the same thing or have any insights.
Like many of you, I’ve been using Gemini quite actively for several months now, and I’ve accumulated a significant number of chat conversations. Recently, I was trying to find an older chat from a couple of months ago, but I couldn’t seem to locate it in my chat library within Gemini.
After some investigation, I’ve noticed that the chat library seems to only display the most recent approximately 90 chat conversations. When I scroll down in the library, it appears to stop loading older chats after reaching this limit. The last visible chat at the bottom of my list is about a month old in terms of last activity, but I know I have conversations older than that.
To confirm this, I even tried a little experiment. I deleted one of the most recent chat conversations from the visible list in my library. And guess what? Deleting that recent chat caused the list to shift, and an older, previously hidden chat conversation appeared at the bottom of the library view! This strongly suggests that older chats aren’t deleted, they’re just not being shown in the standard library interface once you go beyond a certain number of recent conversations.
Furthermore, I tried using the search function within the chat library to find these older conversations by name, but the search also seems to be limited to the same set of approximately 90 recent chats displayed on the page. It doesn’t appear to search my entire chat history.
While I did eventually find all my chats by going to Google Drive (which is where they are all stored, thankfully!), this is a really inconvenient workaround. It’s not intuitive to expect users to go digging in Google Drive to access their full chat history. We should be able to easily access all our conversations directly within the Gemini interface itself.
Suggestion for Improvement and Discussion:
It would be fantastic if the Google Ai chat library could be improved to display all user chat history within the Libraly interface itself. Perhaps this could be achieved by:
Displaying all chats on a single page (if technically feasible and doesn’t impact performance too much).
Implementing pagination, similar to forum pages, where we can browse through pages of, say, 50 chat conversations at a time.
Has anyone else encountered this limitation with the chat library? What are your thoughts on this? Do you think it’s important to have easy access to our entire chat history within Gemini?
Thank you to the Google AI team for creating Gemini and this fantastic platform! It’s a tool I and many others use and appreciate very much.
