Google AI Studio — “Failed to list imported projects: permission denied” / unable to access or import projects

Hello Google AI Studio team,

I am experiencing a persistent permissions issue in Google AI Studio.

When accessing Google AI Studio and trying to work with my projects, I receive an error similar to:

“Failed to list imported projects: permission denied. Please try again.”

The issue appears to be specific to Google AI Studio.

I previously contacted Firebase Support because I wanted to confirm whether this behavior could be related to Firebase Studio or a workspace migration. Firebase Support reviewed the case and clarified that this is not related to Firebase Studio migration or Firebase services.

They also confirmed that Firebase and Google AI Studio are separate products and advised me to report the issue here in the Google AI Developers Forum.

Current situation

  • My Google account itself is accessible normally.
  • The problem occurs specifically when accessing Google AI Studio / imported projects.
  • The Firebase-related issue I had previously encountered was already resolved and is not the subject of this report.
  • This report concerns only the current Google AI Studio permission problem.
  • I am unable to reliably list/access/import the projects I should have access to.

Error

Failed to list imported projects: permission denied. Please try again.

In some flows, the problem appears to be a broader PERMISSION_DENIED condition related to Google AI Studio access.

Expected behavior

Google AI Studio should list the Google Cloud projects available to my account and allow me to import or access eligible projects.

Actual behavior

Google AI Studio fails to list or access the projects and returns a permission-denied error.

What has already been checked

  • Google account access is working.
  • This is not a Firebase Studio workspace migration issue.
  • Firebase Support has confirmed that troubleshooting this issue is outside the Firebase product scope.
  • The issue was therefore redirected to the Google AI Studio / Google AI Developers team.

Request

Could you please help determine whether:

  1. there is an account-level restriction affecting Google AI Studio;
  2. there is a project-level restriction preventing AI Studio from listing/importing the project;
  3. additional IAM permissions or Google Cloud configuration are required;
  4. the account/project has been incorrectly restricted by Google AI Studio;
  5. there is an internal access restriction that requires review by the Google AI Studio team.

I can provide the Google Cloud Project ID, Project Number, screenshots, timestamps and any additional diagnostic information privately if required.

For security reasons, I prefer not to publish sensitive project/account identifiers in the public thread.

We have recently rolled out a mandatory age verification initiative across signed-in customers globally, Accounts that have not completed explicit date-of-birth/identity verification should do so by navigating to Google Account Age Verification or verifying date of birth in Google Account Personal Info."

Also, Make sure you are accessing AI Studio from one of the supported regions, disconnect any VPN, proxy, or iCloud Private Relay and access AI Studio directly.
