The Situation
So here’s the thing - Gemini lets you pin conversations, but there are three issues: - Pinned conversations still reorder by “most recently used” - No manual drag-and-drop to arrange them - No folders/grouping for organizing contexts Basically, you can pin stuff, but you can’t control where it stays. When managing 15+ project contexts, that’s a problem.
(Fig 1-2: the pin context is auto-reordering)
Why this is a problem?
When managing 15+ project contexts (e.g., travel itinerary design,
system optimization, financial analysis), pinned items become
useless because their position changes every time you open them.
I almost spend about 10 minutes daily just hunting for the right context among my pinned list. That might not sound like much, but for someone managing multiple tour designs with tight deadlines, every minute counts. More frustrating is breaking my flow state each time I have to visually scan the entire list instead of relying on muscle memory.
My suggestion
I really want to make this work in Gemini because I prefer its speed and integration with Google Workspace. So I thought about what minimal changes could solve this friction:
-
Fixed Position Pinning
- Pinned items stay in user-defined order
- Option: “Lock position” toggle per conversation
-
Manual Reordering
- Drag-and-drop interface for pinned items
- Keyboard shortcuts: Cmd+↑/↓ to reorder
-
Folders/Groups (Optional but valuable)
- Create folders within pinned section
- Collapsible sections for better organization
Fig 3:Mockup Design For References from Notion app’sidebar. It’s allowed users to drag and drop and manage the content by both: topic (pages) and groups (teamspace) and its position are fixed and managable by users.
P/s: This is from a travel management tool I’m building where I face this exact issue daily. The “airport terminal” structure (gates, check-in counters) with its own icons helps me navigate 15+ contexts without thinking . I do hope Google can build similar for context windows management in Gemini.
Competitive Comparation
(Fig 4: screenchot from claude AI's projects)
Claude’s “Projects” feature allows exactly this - fixed
position contexts with custom organization. Users are switching
to Claude specifically for this workflow capability.
In Conclusion
I’m seeing more power users switching to Claude just for this organization feature, even though they prefer Gemini’s speed and integration. The fact that third-party Chrome extensions are getting 4.5★ ratings solving this exact problem shows there’s real demand here. I really don’t want to be forced to split my workflow between two tools - I want to work entirely in Gemini, but the current pinning behavior makes that hard for complex projects. Hope the team can consider this.
Thanks Google AI Team for creating this platform so that I can share my feedback and request features (that I beleive a real demand from many loyal users).
