[BUG] PDF, DOCX and PPTX uploads rejected as unsupported on Android (Samsung Galaxy A71, Brave 1.96.61)

Hi Google AI Studio team,

I’m reporting a document-upload issue affecting Google AI Studio on my Android device.

Environment

- Device: Samsung Galaxy A71

- Browser: Brave 1.96.61

- Platform: Android

- Models tested: Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini 4 Argon

Problem

AI Studio rejects PDF, DOCX and PPTX files with an unsupported-file-type error. When a PDF is attached through Google Drive, it appears in the prompt box as a generic file thumbnail rather than a preview of its first page, and the token count beside it remains at zero.

Reproduction and testing

1. Attempt to attach a PDF using the Android file picker.

2. Observe the unsupported-file-type error.

3. Try attaching the same PDF through Google Drive.

4. Observe that the file appears in the prompt box but remains unprocessed, with zero tokens.

5. Repeat with a different PDF and with DOCX and PPTX files.

6. Verify that JPG/PNG images and TXT/MD files upload and work correctly.

The PDF files tested are valid, and one is approximately 5 MB. Both Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini 4 Argon exhibit the same behaviour.

Expected behaviour

Supported document formats should be accepted and processed, with their contents available to the selected model.

Actual behaviour

Document attachments are rejected or remain unprocessed, while image and plain-text attachments work normally.

Could the team investigate whether this is a regression in AI Studio’s document attachment handling, MIME-type detection, or document-processing pipeline on Android/Brave?

Please let me know if additional diagnostic information would help reproduce the issue.

To help us investigate further, could you please confirm:

  • Does disabling Brave Shields (or testing in Chrome) resolve the upload error?
  • Does this happen with all document files or only specific ones?
  • Could you share a short screen recording showing the error during the upload attempt?

On Disabling brave shield and attempting file uploads, it showed same error message

I also tried via chrome and its the same issue

The issue is seen with all document files(e.g .md, .txt, .pdf, .docx, .pptx etc) the only format that works is plain text and img formats(e.g jpeg)

Hello @Emmanuel_Olaposi ,

There are two separate things happening here:

  1. .docx and .pptx files: Direct .docx and .pptx uploads are not natively supported in AI Studio or the Gemini API. To use Word or PowerPoint files, please convert them to PDF first (or open and save them as Google Docs / Google Slides in Google Drive before attaching them). See the Document understanding guide for supported document formats.
  2. PDF files ("Document input is not supported."): In your screenshot, the chat is running with an Agent selected (Agent), which currently supports text and image inputs only. To upload and process PDFs, .txt, or .md files, please start a new chat in Playground and select a standard Gemini model (such as Gemini 3.8 Flash or Gemini 4 Argon) from the model selector.
