I’m experiencing an unexpected tier downgrade on my Gemini API project.
Issue:
My project was on Tier 2, but it has been automatically downgraded to Tier 1
without any action on my part.
Details:
Billing account: fully active, no payment issues
No changes made to project settings or usage policies
No notification or warning received prior to downgrade
Impact:
Rate limits are now restricted to Tier 1
This is affecting my production app which relies on the Gemini API
What I’m requesting:
Restoration of Tier 2 access
Clarification on why the automatic downgrade occurred
I’ve seen several similar reports in this forum
(e.g. threads from March–April 2026) and it appears to be a known issue
on Google’s side. Appreciate any help or escalation.
I encountered the same serious issue. After a couple of days during which it had moved from Tier 1 to Tier 2, I noticed a sudden downgrade back to Tier 1, resulting in 429 errors.

I hope you can resolve this issue as soon as possible! It’s also crucial to understand whether and how this could happen again in the future: I’m building a service based on the Gemini TTS API, and I need to be sure that something like this doesn’t happen again. Otherwise, I’ll have to look for alternative services that are more reliable than yours.
