Hello,
I got an email from the Gemini API team stating:
”We’re writing to inform you that Gemini 2.5 Flash Image Preview (gemini-2.5-flash-image-preview) in the Gemini API will be discontinued on January 15, 2026.
Please migrate to the following recommended generally available model for improved performance and capabilities:
- Gemini 2.5 Flash Image (
gemini-2.5-flash-image*)*”
I am not sure how to do this, I must be missing something. My code is pointing to:
https://generativelanguage.googleapis.com/v1beta/models/gemini-2.5-flash-image:generateContent?key=***
I have also generated a new API key but when checking my Usage and Billing in AI studio, it just increments the traffic for gemini-2.5-flash-preview-image after making a request (I would have thought it would be something like “gemini-2.5-flash-image”). I’m thinking my request URL is probably wrong but not sure. In a chat with Gemini, it ruled out my observation of the reference to v1beta.
I’m a bit stumped. Any suggestions?
Leon.
Hi @leonclem,
Welcome to the AI Forum! Thanks for reporting this issue.
Can you please confirm if you are still experiencing this issue with the migration? Could you please provide a screenshot of your AI Studio Usage and Billing display?
Here is my screenshot as of today (6th Jan 2026 @ 0037 Singapore local time).
Coincidentally I just received the same email below. This is a bit worrying considering I’ve followed the advice but my application and clients are still at risk. Any meaningful suggestions that I can follow are welcome.
EDIT >>> I’m not allowed to paste the second screenshot, will try and follow up with that.
Hi Pooja, any thoughts? I’m aware the clock is ticking but I’m not clear on what I’m doing wrong.
Hi @leonclem,
Thanks for following up and updating with required details. We have escalated this issue to the concerned team for further investigation.
Hi Pooja, I’m concerned I’m going to lose service - can you please provide an update?
As things stand, I will need to switch to another provider which is a massive upheaval and something I’m already forced to work on given the level or responsivity so far.
I would be delighted to learn if this is a simple change (e.g. adjustment for my URL) if someone could find some time to review.
Thank you.
