In Antigravity v2.17.0 this “improvement” was added:
- Per-project configuration moved. Repository customization settings now load from
/.gemini/config.json. The older.agents/settings.jsonis no longer read — move anypersonal_customization_direntry into the new file.
First off, it’s ridiculous to slip a breaking change in as an “improvement” smack in the middle of a list with ten other things where it can be easily overlooked. Anyone who doesn’t thoroughly read the changelog on every release will just have their per-project configurations silently stop working and they’ll have no idea why.
Furthermore, you didn’t have to make this a breaking change at all. It would have been simple enough to support either option or allow for graceful degradation that falls back on the old pattern. Instead, you just destroyed my platform agnostic agentic repos on a whim by deciding a /.gemini subdirectory is now required. I am now forced to rethink my entire platform agnostic pattern on all my agentic repos because you are trying to strong arm developers into Gemini specific workflows.
Supporting open standards over trying to lock people into your ecosystem was the winning move over Microsoft. Forcing me to do things only the “Google way” makes me like your product less, not more.
