[BUG] Google Drive deep-links to AI Studio now open Library (not the target conversation) + Drive import returns “Failed to convert file

Summary

  • Double-clicking AI Studio chat files in Google Drive (or Open with → Google AI Studio) always lands on https://aistudio.google.com/app/library instead of the specific conversation.
  • Attempting to open the same files from within AI Studio via Add → Google Drive fails with “Failed to convert file.”
  • Because the Library view hides older chats (appears capped around ~90 items), this combination cuts off access to most conversations. Recent threads on Google’s official forums confirm both the Drive→Library redirect and the ~90 item cap.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. In AI Studio, ensure autosave to Drive is ON. Create a new conversation (to rule out legacy files).
  2. In Google Drive, locate that new chat file → Open with → Google AI Studio.
  3. Observed: Loads /app/library (not the specific conversation).
  4. In AI Studio, start a new chat → Add → Google Drive → select the same file.
  5. Observed: “Failed to convert file.”

Issues

  • Drive deep-links redirect to Library.
  • Drive import fails conversion with “Failed to convert file.”
  • Library hides older conversations

Impact

  • Hard data lock-out: Can’t reopen or continue the majority of conversations saved in Drive.
  • Cross-device: Same behavior on desktop & mobile (account-wide).
  • Workflow breakage: Durable links from Drive are unreliable; history retrieval depends on the Library cap.
  • Not mitigated by local actions: Clearing cache, re-auth, single-account sessions, or storage checks don’t resolve it (status page shows no incident).

Environment

  • Account: Consumer Google Account (not Workspace).
  • Browsers: Chrome
  • Mobile: Android also reproduces.
  • Region: North America
  • AI Studio status: Normal (no active incident).

  1. Restore Drive deep-link behavior so AI Studio opens the specific conversation referenced by the Drive item.

It is the same for me. I am having some conversations shared by my colleagues and when I open their links and log in (no matter to which account) it redirects me to History, not showing said conversation in the History. Could this be a bug from a recent internal version? It is weird they have not fixed it already… I assume this is happening to everybody, right?

Can confirm that this is happening since at least the 24th or 23rd of September, and combined with the unusable technical state of AI Studio library/chat history, now it’s borderline impossible to access previous chats on mobile, how is this getting broken more and more is baffling me

I yelled at them on X today.
3 hours later, its working.
