Will discontinuation of Gemini 2.0 flash expire tuned model based on this one?

I posted this a few days ago, but since I have not received any answer I am going to give it another try!

I am developing a tool for which I need to fine tune a Gemini model through VertexAI. I have been doing some tests with Gemini 2.0 Flash since it seems to be the best working model for me. However, when I now check my tuned model in VertexAI it says that it is going to expire on the 5th of February 2026 which is the discontinuation date for the base model.

Will tuned model stop working then? Do I have to necessarily have to update the base model? If I do so and tune that one, will I have to repeat the process once it is discontinued and hence pay for all the tuning again?

Thanks in advance!

Hii @Cristobal
Thank you for reaching out to us.

Currently, multiple Gemini models support fine-tuning and are working as expected. Your tuned model remains supported at this time. However, since model availability and lifecycle policies can change, we recommend staying up to date with the official Google Vertex AI documentation and announcements related to fine-tuning and model deprecations. Regularly reviewing these updates will help you plan any required migrations in advance and avoid potential disruptions.
