What is a "tokens per day" quota?

I’ve been using Gemini 3 Pro on both the paid and free tiers and some time into the day I can’t make any requests regardless of model (except for 2.5 flash lite) even though I attached an api key, switching projects or keys or refreshing does nothing.

Looking in DevTools I see a response from the API with:

'\[,\[8,"Tokens per day quota exceeded.",\[\["type.googleapis.com/google.internal.alkali.applications.makersuite.v1.GeminiApiErrorDetails"\]\]\]\]'

I tried Googling around for what this means but could not find any information. I looked in the Google AI Studio dashboard and did not find anything related to a TPD nor have my TPM or RPM/RPD limits have been exceeded, and TPD doesnt appear to be documented anywhere either.

What is this limit and why am I exceeding it and can’t use any other model because of it?

Thanks for reaching out to us.The Tokens Per Day (TPD) limit is your project’s total daily cap on tokens (input and output) used across all models, resetting every 24 hours. If you are a paid user and run into this, you need to raise a request to increase this TPD quota in the Google AI Studio.
