Unexpected Vertex AI charges (£900+) – seeking advice / similar experiences

I’m a relatively new user of Google Cloud and recently received an unexpected bill of ~£925 for March 2026.

The majority of the cost (~£440) came from Vertex AI, with a much smaller amount (~£23) from the Gemini API.

Looking at the usage, there was a spike between March 28–30, and I’m trying to understand what may have caused this. I did not realise that certain Vertex AI services (e.g. endpoints, jobs, or background processes) could continue to incur charges without active use.

I have now disabled the APIs as advised by Google support and opened a billing case.

Has anyone experienced something similar with Vertex AI, particularly related to services continuing to run unintentionally? Were you able to resolve this with Google Cloud billing?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, as this came as a complete surprise.

Yes. The price is just insane. I’ve moved over to codex.
