Possible Billing Bug – Sudden Spike in Gemini API Charges Since Aug 27

We’ve observed what looks like a billing anomaly in our Google Cloud project (crafty-stock-228006) related to Gemini API.

  • Our typical monthly billing is in the range of ₹4–5 lakhs (USD $5K equivalent).
  • Beginning 27 August 2025, Gemini API charges suddenly increased by more than ₹2 lakhs per day (USD 2k), leading to a cumulative impact of around ₹38 Lakhs (~$43K).
  • The spike is attributed to Gemini API SKU, “ Generate content input token count Gemini 2.5 Pro long input text ”, even though we have not used Gemini API at all before this. Moreover, our usage patterns and workloads have not changed.
  • We have checked internally and did not make any configuration changes that would justify this increase.

We would like to understand:

  1. Has there been any recent change in Gemini API billing or metering logic that could explain this jump?
  2. Have other users observed similar billing spikes starting late August 2025?
  3. What is the best way to validate whether this is a billing bug vs expected metering?

We have already raised this with our vendor and Google Billing Support, but posting here for community inputs and visibility.

Yes. Until August end daily charges used to be around 10 to 15 k INR Now, in September 2025.. per day charges, with similar usage is crossing 100k every day.

This has collapsed all our plans

They were reverting some of the charges.. i seen charges for 6th, 7th and 8th sept reverted back. but the huge billing is triggering payments and creating critical issues.

Same here. From 03rd September over to 5th September our “Generate content input token count Gemini 2.5 Pro short input text” went up 1334% without any changes from our sides.

Did you find a solution?

Is it again a bug, @Logan_Kilpatrick? There was already a similar incident just some weeks ago

This situation is very likely due to your key being compromised. Please immediately delete your Gemini key.

No, this is not a key compromise situation. They are billing high (10x) and then settling it down to the actual after 4 days. However, this can totally disrupt the cash flow of my company as they are taking almost (10x cost of per day billing) X (5x cost of 4 days settlement)

for eg: if my billing per day is approximately 20,000 INR..
i have to pay around 20,000 X 10 X 5 = 10,00,000 INR upfront. This large amount can very well disrupt the cash flow.
They are not taking the money, and their accounts are settled properly later. BUT this upfront amount is stuck only to keep my account running.
in few days back, a screenshot shot you can see usage for 14th Sept. But if compared to the latest. The usage for 14 Sept is gone.
