Should we build a forum AI?

Hi!

Wouldn’t it be great to have an AI that can answer the most frequently asked questions instead of having a bunch of regulars repeatedly answering the same questions over and over again?

Wouldn’t it also be great to have the opportunity to build it from the ground up?

Well, I see this opportunity right here. Right now.

What about you? Ideas, thoughts?

Personally, I have never created an FAQ bot using Google’s API, but technically, it should be entirely possible with language model.

I’m a firm believer that forums should be for real people and not bots, and I think most people are seeking a real human response when they post on a forum.

This doesn’t mean I’m against the use of bots, I’m only against bots that attempt to interact with users

I’m all for bots that provide valuable content directly to users, an example of this could be a bit that scan the notebook repo, and makes a post about it on the forum if there’s any updates.

Regarding AI, I’m all in for having forum integrations that helps people communicate more fluently, and I do miss having AI proofreading, table creation and translation features available

As I went to think about what to type, I was going to joke “I thought that’s what Google’s customer service already is”

However, as I finished that thought, I just now realized I have no clue what google defines to be in the jurisdiction of this forum, and when it would be better to redirect to another service, because there is a lot of different google help support pages for different services. There’s a lot of google services to navigate in general.

I will say I never used Discourse bots much. It might be a better mod tool than a replier?

This is the biggest one for me.

Maybe.

Yes, I agree. Maybe if there was a category only for the bot responses and the bot wouldn’t post anywhere else?

Do we know if gemini would be good at identifying a “needle in a haystack” phrase in the million token context length?

Perhaps like finding a quote, post, or some sort of text in the forum? I could see a bot being helpful for fetching content that a human has already made but cannot (or is unwilling) to find.

Only about half of the issues with bot responses can actually be solved by the developer, the other half will be users who deliberately try to break them or doesn’t know how to use them.

It’s not that I haven’t tried making interactive bots, but the feedback is “mixed” at it’s best

You can have bot topics that normal users are unable to post in, I usually do this for announcement topics and it works great.

Funny we all think similar. I was also thinking to embed docs and RAG all the way!

Maybe we could use that discourse bot that appears in the top pane? That way it won’t be interacting publically with all the users and still be easily accessible.

One of the problems would be to avoid/minimize abuse.

I like the idea of TL-2 and greater.

This would be useful, it would be interesting to figure out how you would fit every message in the forum into its context. Maybe embedding?

This seems like a project to hold at the back of your minds for now until more people show up and we can figure out how this community is going to function.

This is also my takeaway from this, as we don’t really have any frequently asked questions yet, and much of the forums SEO logic is also dependant on people actually finding the relevant topics and posting there, bots could also affect this in a negative way

Same here, the forum experience should be welcoming to new people and not overwhelming them with a bunch of features that they don’t know how to use

I did notice that discourse’s AI Integration doesn’t support any of google’s API’s yet, but maybe we could help @sam.saffron with that.

For anyone wondering what we’re talking about, here’s a link:

It is probably because the pay-as-you-go plan hasn’t been released yet, so he can’t get more than 50 requests per day.

True, but it might be a good time to start developing

Agreed. So fascinating to see how “human-driven” forums are now becoming hot again with the proliferation of AI.

True, and welcome to the community btw.

I think a big part of it having the ability to communicate with complete different people, and letting veryone participate in the conversation.

Or maybe some people just dislike “bot-stuff”

:100: not gonna lie, it’s been a minute since I’ve been on forums, but I even started revisiting Reddit recently after I saw all their posts coming up on 1st page Google search results. The tools have gotten better for sure!

Ngl, traffic from search engines does a lot of the legwork related to bringing new people in, but it also creates weird feedback loops sometimes

I think people’s disinterest in social media might also have a hand in that.

People still really want to connect, be social, and share things, but many would much prefer to do that without all the extra gunk of social media.

Haha what are some of the “weird” feedback loops?

I hear you. There’s a certain level of quality that gets removed with speed. The design of forums force you to think more about what you want to say, which isn’t always a bad thing. I know the guys at 37signals are big on this with platforms like Basecamp.

Have you tried out Airchat by any chance? It made a resurgence recently on Twitter (but it lasted like 2-3 days for me haha). Main point is that I found their UX forcing me to speak more clearly (because I could hear my audio in response to others fairly quickly). Interesting experience.
