Sending messages ctrl+enter & android web

Today, the ability to move to the next line by pressing the corresponding button on Android has disappeared. On PC, they made it inconveniently too, before, you could freely write text and move to a new line by pressing the “enter” button. Please, return the old version “ctrl+enter”.

I made this same discovery too. Midway through a session after refreshing the page by accident it seemed like suddenly pressing “enter” just once is now sufficient to send a message. This is a terrible design decision and one that has no rational explanation given that Google’s AI Studio is a pseudo-markdown text environment.

Let’s be clear on why this is a terrible idea and should be reversed. For 95% of users in AI Studio, breaking a line is almost certainly going to be 10x more common than sending a message.

  • If users are sending a bullet point list like this to the model
  1. or a numbered list like this

They will need to use a line break.

If users want to paste a snippet or block of code for the model to help out with,

They will need to use a line break

This is such a poor and badly thought on design decision on Google’s part and so detrimental to the UX that it feels like the lead devs do not use their own services at all.

I think the dumbest thing in my opinion though is that in particular, for this one specific change, it seems that it would have been so easy to provide users a toggle or option to revert the behavior in the settings menu. As a matter of fact they could have asked Gemini itself to do it.

Changing this behavior to make the enter key send messages by default rather than create a line break is simply absentminded. Doing so without even providing users an option to revert the behavior to its old, more useful state is malicious.

You can change it in Setting → Submit Prompt Key → Ctrl + Enter.
