Request for Guidance on Gemini API Pricing and Future Publication of NIT Buddy

Dear Google Gemini Team,

My name is Narendra, and I am a student currently developing an AI-powered assistant called NIT Buddy.

NIT Buddy is designed to help users with programming, learning, productivity, and voice-based laptop assistance. I am currently working on the project and plan to publish it publicly in the future.

My initial goal is to support approximately 100–150 users, with the possibility of expanding the user base later. I would like to integrate the Gemini API as the primary AI provider for NIT Buddy.

Before proceeding, I would appreciate your guidance on the following questions:

1. Can I use the Gemini API for a publicly published application such as NIT Buddy?

2. Is there a free tier available for development, testing, and initial deployment?

3. If the number of users increases to 100–150 or more, will I need to purchase a subscription or pay additional API usage charges?

4. Is a Google AI subscription required, or is Gemini API billing handled separately?

5. What usage limits, pricing plans, and requirements should I consider before publishing the application?

6. Are there any special requirements or restrictions for using the Gemini API in a publicly available application?

7. What would you recommend for managing API costs and usage limits as the application grows?

I plan to securely store the API key on my backend server and implement individual user usage limits to help manage costs and protect the service.

I am currently developing NIT Buddy as a student project, with plans to publish it in the future. I would like to understand the pricing, subscription requirements, and usage policies in advance so that I can plan the project responsibly.

Thank you for your time and guidance. I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Narendra

Hello @Narendra_Medaboina,

We can’t provide specific legal guidance on this forum. Please refer to the documents below:

For your pricing and usage questions:

  • The Free Tier offers free tokens on certain models, up to their rate limits, for development and small projects. Free Tier prompts and responses are used to improve Google products, so avoid sending sensitive or personal data (terms).
  • No subscription is needed; if you outgrow Free Tier limits, link billing and pay per token (Billing). Google AI plans apply only in the AI Studio web interface; API usage is billed separately.
  • Rate limits apply per project, not per API key, so all your users share one project’s limits. Paid tiers raise limits automatically as your spend grows; compare per-model prices on the Pricing page. New users default to Prepay billing, and API keys stop working when the credit balance runs out.
  • Keeping the key on your backend matches the API key security rules. To control costs, set a project spend cap, monitor usage, and use a cost-efficient model.
