I assume that by “public interface” you mean the consumer application, https://gemini.google.com/app
The consumer app has several supporting functions incorporated into the application, one of which is Google search. So, in the consumer application, Gemini can follow the advice it gave you, use search and retrieve the requested information.
You can get the same effect in AI Studio by enabling the tool “Grounding”.
