Proposal: Model Escrow and Sunset Open-Weight Release for Gemini 2.5

Subject: Proposal for Digital Preservation and Sunset Release of Gemini 2.5

To the Google DeepMind and Google AI Product Teams,

I am writing as an independent developer from the Netherlands regarding the upcoming June 17, 2026, retirement of Gemini 2.5 Pro and Flash.

These models represent a historical milestone in AI reasoning. Deprecating them without a preservation path is a loss for the research community. I am proposing a Sunset Open-Weight Release for the Gemini 2.5 series.

The Proposal:

Upon the official shutdown on June 17, please consider releasing the model weights under a restrictive “Research & Preservation” license. This would allow developers to transition the models to our own hardware, removing the compute cost from Google while ensuring the 2.5 reasoning logic remains available for study.

Why this is a strategic win for Google:

Liability Transition: Releasing weights for local hosting shifts the operational and safety responsibility to the user.

Industry Leadership: As open-weights models (like DeepSeek) become the standard for transparency, Google can lead by preserving its legacy frontier models rather than deleting them.

Community Trust: This would be a powerful gesture of goodwill to the developers who have invested thousands of hours into the Gemini 2.5 ecosystem.

I am not asking for Google to maintain the infrastructure, only to let the community carry the logic forward.

With respect,

Independent Developer, The Netherlands
