Hello everyone!
I have been using google ai studio to develop my company website for over a year now. Since the recent changes in the bill payment (for both ai studio and gemini API), i am facing the invalid argument error. The changes as required by Google were accepted and pre-payments made on Thursday, 10th September 2026. However, I continue to face the issue.
To note:

the website do not use any AI

i created a new project and built a new app from scratch and its working as expected
What I have attempted
-
moved linked billing account to pre-paid account as required
-
paid off any balance payment to other billing accounts
-
updated gemini API in the project to active billing account
-
downloaded the code in ZIP file and created a new project. It gives the same error

If you are still experiencing this issue, could you check if switching to a different model resolves the error? Also, could you share the specific prompt or action you were providing when the failure/error occurred?
This applet is for my website. I had last modified it in June or July 2026. I wanted to update the website and hence tried with the first prompt with details of changes. Then I got an alert to change the payment mode from postpaid to prepaid for both Google cloud and google gemini api. One of the existing api was linked to an old billing account which I deleted (or suspended). That billing account had 0.83 rupees due and I got an email that it will be billed in sept 2026 invoice.
I updated all active billing accounts and api to prepaid as prompted and also paid off the billing account which I had deleted (500 paid as against 0.83 rupees).
I created new api and linked to active billing account for this applet.
Ever since the above changes, what ever prompt I give, the invalid argument error is thrown.
I downloaded the code in zip file and uploaded to a new project within the same google ai studio account and I get the same error message.
Then I deleted the config file and bunk file (i think) and uploaded to another google account and it started working.
additionally, I build websites and other tools for other organizations.
one of that project is also facing this issue from today. its a non profit organization. applet ID is 2f30f62a-ec57-47ca-a9e3-317d8e0824..

Its not possible for us to replicate exact chat journey which led your AIS app to this stage.
However you can try doing a new chat within the same app by opening the app in Google AI Studio Build Mode, click the + (New chat) icon at the top of the Code Assistant chat panel, and select Start new chat (uploading any needed documents directly as local files) rather than providing links. This should let you have the chat with AIS regarding that applet without loosing your applet files.

Could you please provide screenshots and describe the specific issue or error message you encountered after starting a new chat?

Did you attach a Google Doc or Google Sheet directly from Google Drive to these projects or prompts? Referencing a native Google Drive document or spreadsheet directly in Build Mode sometimes triggers an “Invalid argument” error, and if that Google Drive file remains attached or is re-selected in the new session, the error will happen again even after starting a new chat.
To resolve this:
- Remove any Google Drive document or sheet attachments from the chat/project.
- Click the + (Start new chat) icon at the top of the Build Mode chat panel to start a fresh chat session.
- If you need to share document or spreadsheet content with the assistant, download/export the file to your computer (for example, as a .pdf, .csv, or .txt file) and upload it as a local file instead of selecting it from Google Drive.
