I would like to report
a persistent image generation / image editing issue in Google AI Studio.
I am repeatedly getting the following errors when trying to run an image editing task:
- “Failed to generate content. Please try again.”
- “An internal error has occurred.”
This is happening consistently today, and the issue still occurs even after reducing the request complexity significantly.
Environment:
- Platform: Google AI Studio (web)
- Model: Nano Banana 2
- Underlying model shown in UI: gemini-3.1-flash-image-preview
- Task type: image editing with 2 reference images
- Output format: Images only
- Aspect ratio tested: 21:9
- Resolution tested: 2K and 4K
- Thinking level tested: High, Low, and Off
- Grounding with Google Search: Off
- Image search: Off
What I am trying to do:
I am editing an existing room scene with a product image reference.
This is a simple direction/orientation correction task, not a complex multi-object generation task.
Very short test prompt that also fails:
“Use image 1 as the main scene reference and image 2 only as the bed orientation reference.
This is the same exact bed, not a replacement.
Keep the same position, same size, same perspective, same composition, same room, and same lighting from image 1.
Only turn the bed direction to match image 2.
Do not add objects.
Do not change the room.
Photorealistic, realistic contact shadow, neutral off-white top, light cool gray-blue sidewalls.”
Steps to reproduce:
- Open a new AI Studio / Playground session
- Upload 2 reference images
- Use a short image editing prompt
- Set output to Images only
- Try 21:9 at 2K
- Run generation
Expected result:
The model should generate an edited image based on the two references.
Actual result:
The run fails with:
- “Failed to generate content. Please try again.”
- “An internal error has occurred.”
What I already tried:
- Started a completely new chat / new playground session
- Reduced the prompt to a very short version
- Switched to Images only
- Lowered resolution from 4K to 2K
- Lowered thinking level from High to Low / Off
- Kept only 2 reference images
- Disabled Grounding with Google Search
- Disabled Image search
The same issue still happens.
Frequency:
This is not occasional for me today. It is happening repeatedly, including with short prompts and reduced settings.
Why I am posting:
At this point, it does not look like a prompt-length issue or a normal overload from a heavy request.
It seems more like a model-side or AI Studio-side internal error on the image generation/editing path.
Could someone from Google please check whether there is an issue today affecting:
- Nano Banana 2
- gemini-3.1-flash-image-preview
- AI Studio image editing with reference images
