Google AI Studio + Gemini --> UNBEARABLE lags and slowness

AI Studio is once again to slow to be of use. Anyone else?

YES, UNBEARABLY SLOW. Google should have a hard look at how it designs these dom things. This is ridiculous for a frontier company.

Even the typing is extremely slow. It looks like lot of network calls are made to ā€œcountTokensā€ on every single keyboard input.

Hi, is there any way to disable these calls through dev console? Cant type anything past 10 messages in convo, tab just freesing completely :frowning:

Chrome’s task manager shows more than 100% CPU usage on any reasonably large conversation now, and it’s basically unusable once you approach the 100k token mark as far as I can tell.

Has anyone found a solution? I’m using Gemini 2.5, and the lag is unbearable. It takes around 10 minutes just to open the chat, and once it’s open, every letter I type takes about 2 minutes to appear. Starting a new prompt doesn’t help either. I’m only at around 40k used tokens. Google, please fix this—it’s completely unusable

I am also experiencing significant difficulties. I am unable to access any chat functions. I have tried various browsers (including Chrome) to no avail. Clearing browsing data and using incognito mode have yielded no results. I initially suspected a problem with my machine, but that does not appear to be the case, as other AI platforms are functioning normally. Several of my projects are now stalled.

I am even struggling to input commands. For urgent matters, I have resorted to typing into Notepad and then copying the text into the prompt.

In short, nothing is working. Everything is completely frozen.

I am so glad that I am not alone! Google API has become so slow these days that is even unbearable. Everytime I have to make a new prompt but it isn’t enough to even satisfy. I have prompts that I want to complete or still work on!

I’m also experiencing this problem. Due to lag this is really unusable.

If this helps in any way.

Memory doesn’t seem to be that clogged up, but when I type in the conversation, it increases my CPU usage in that tab to at least 11%. 236k tokens, was not an issue over 1 week ago for me until now.

I’m facing the same problem with chrome as well as with firefox

I tried it with Arc, Firefox, and Chrome. No differences.

Yeah, same thing for me. I did see that when the text renders properly, the website hangs (at least for me), but before that, it’s not too laggy and is usable, like it was a few days ago.

I think CPU usage is the smoking gun. I tried AI Studio and about 30k tokens on iPad using Safari, and the device got too hot to touch (=excessive CPU usage).

any new news , i cant find the overlay scrillbar option in flags , and the ai studio page is unusable , i have to write the prompt outside and copy and past it , and the back up to drive is lagging and not working at all …etc

That has always been it imo but a few days ago 30K tokens wouldn’t make the whole website hang but now it can.
Wish there was occlusion culling for text :joy:

Deleting past messages in the chat helped me.

  1. open Inspect (F12)
  2. delete the old chat bubbles (chat bubbles that are my messages and the ai’s replies).
The beginning of this element looks something like this:

ms-chat-turn _ngcontent-ng-c9999999999=ā€œā€ _nghost-ng-c9999999999=ā€œā€ class=ā€œng-star-insertedā€

  1. find it, click on the top one and hold down backspace

Possibly lagging because of:

!----

For some reason, there are about 3500 of these things in each bubble.

To me, disabling auto-save to Google drive remove much of the lag. Once auto-save is on lag becomes unbearable.

I have this solution: Its not a browser prblm,it happens when conversation is too long, the website become laggy and slow, its a google issue, so my solution is You go to the file saved in your Google Drive automatically (named after your conversation), download it, then edit it and save it as a .txt file. After that, upload it to a new conversation in Google AI Studio. It contains all the context, and now you have a lag-free text field.
