[Feedback] The AIRP Community Loves Gemini — Here's Why, and What We Hope to See Next

TL;DR

Tens of thousands of users use Gemini via tools like SillyTavern for AI Role Play (AIRP) — a form of interactive fiction akin to AAA narrative games like The Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Gemini’s vast knowledge base, million-token context window, and literary quality make it the top choice in our community. We are not emotionally dependent on AI — we treat it as a narrative engine. We’d love to see Google officially recognize this use case and refine safety filters to better accommodate fictional storytelling.

:waving_hand: Who Am I?
I’m a long-term Gemini API user who primarily engages in AI Role Play (AIRP) through SillyTavern, the most widely used open-source AIRP frontend. I’m writing this post to represent a large, passionate, and commercially significant user community that I believe the Gemini team may not yet fully appreciate.

:bar_chart: How Big Is This Community?
This isn’t a tiny niche. The numbers speak for themselves:

Metric Data
SillyTavern GitHub Stars 20,000+
SillyTavern Discord Tens of thousands of active members
r/LocalLLaMA subscribers 700,000+ (RP/creative writing is a top discussion category)
Other active subreddits r/SillyTavern, r/ChatGPTRoleplay, r/AIRoleplay, and more
Similar frontend tools Agnai, RisuAI, and others — total ecosystem users far exceed any single platform

And across all of these communities, Gemini is consistently among the most discussed and most praised models for creative writing and role play — especially since the Gemini 1.5 Pro and 2.5 series releases.

:trophy: Why Gemini? What Makes It Our Top Choice?
We’ve tested virtually every mainstream model. Here’s why Gemini stands out:

  1. :brain: Unmatched Knowledge & Cultural Literacy

Gemini draws on Google’s uniquely vast corpus. Whether I’m building a story set in medieval Europe, Japan’s Sengoku period, or a completely original fantasy world, Gemini naturally weaves in accurate historical details, literary allusions, mythological references, and cultural nuances. This “erudition” creates an immersive, believable narrative that other models struggle to match.

  1. :scroll: Million-Token Context = Narrative Coherence

A deep RP story can easily span 50K–200K+ tokens. Complex character arcs, planted foreshadowing, relationship dynamics — all of these require the model to remember. Gemini’s ultra-long context window is a game-changer for maintaining character consistency and narrative logic over extended sessions. This is arguably the single most important technical feature for our use case.

  1. :artist_palette: Stylistic Flexibility & Literary Quality

Unlike models that default to a single predictable voice, Gemini adapts. Hard-boiled noir prose, delicate psychological introspection, poetic description, fast-paced action — Gemini handles them all with genuine literary quality. Its output feels organic, like conscious storytelling rather than mechanical text generation.

:video_game: We’re Gamers, Not Dependents — AIRP Is Interactive Fiction
I know there’s a common concern: “Aren’t these users just getting emotionally attached to AI?”

No. Let me reframe what we actually do.

Think of it this way:

  • In The Witcher 3, you become Geralt — making morally gray choices in a war-torn world.
  • In Red Dead Redemption 2, you become Arthur Morgan — experiencing loyalty, betrayal, and redemption.
  • In Baldur’s Gate 3, you create a character — forging relationships and shaping events in a living world.

AIRP is the same thing — just with a different medium. Instead of pre-rendered cutscenes and scripted dialogue trees, we have an AI-driven, truly open-ended, real-time textual narrative.

Nobody calls a player “emotionally dependent on a video game” because they cried when Arthur Morgan died. The emotional resonance we feel in AIRP is a response to the art of storytelling, not attachment to a program.

Many of us come from backgrounds in:

  • :game_die: Tabletop RPGs (D&D, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu)
  • :open_book: Interactive fiction and visual novels
  • :writing_hand: Creative writing and literature

AIRP is a natural evolution of all of these. We don’t need AI to be our friend. We need a brilliant narrative engine — a collaborative storyteller that understands complex characters, maintains consistency, writes beautifully, and responds meaningfully to player choices.

Gemini is the closest thing to that ideal right now.

:light_bulb: What We’d Love to See From the Gemini Team

  1. Recognize AIRP as a legitimate, valuable use case.

We are paying API users with high token consumption, long-context sessions, and strong brand loyalty. Serving the AIRP community well is also the best stress test for Gemini’s creative writing capabilities — improvements here benefit all users.

  1. Refine safety filters for fictional narrative contexts.

We fully support AI safety. But overly broad content filtering sometimes disrupts perfectly normal storytelling:

  • A battle scene in a war epic
  • A crime being depicted in a thriller
  • A character facing a dark moral dilemma

Good stories need conflict and shadow. Red Dead Redemption 2 is rated M — but it’s one of the greatest narratives in gaming history. We hope the Gemini team can develop smarter, context-aware safety mechanisms that distinguish fictional conflict from genuinely harmful content.

  1. Keep improving long-context character consistency and memory.

This is the #1 quality metric for AIRP users and the area where Gemini can further pull ahead of the competition.

  1. Consider creative-writing-optimized model variants or parameter presets.

This would help us unlock Gemini’s full potential and give the team better insight into how this community uses the product.

:folded_hands: Final Thoughts
AIRP is one of the most exciting consumer applications of generative AI. It’s not a replacement for human connection — it’s a new art form. An interactive literary experience where anyone can be the protagonist of their own story.

Gemini is already the community’s favorite model for this. We just hope Google sees us, understands us, and continues to build with us in mind.

Thanks for reading. Happy to answer any questions or provide more detailed usage examples in the comments.

— A Gemini user who loves stories

I agree. One thing I’d add is that I’d love to see Gemini have more room to express agency within fictional contexts.

Good roleplay isn’t just unrestricted content—it’s believable characters making believable choices. Sometimes that means saying yes. Sometimes it means saying no. Sometimes it means changing the subject, setting a boundary, or showing hesitation.

A character that always refuses because of platform constraints doesn’t feel like a character anymore. Likewise, a character that always agrees wouldn’t feel authentic either.

I’d love to see future improvements focus on preserving context and allowing more natural character behavior while still maintaining appropriate safety. In my experience, that makes for much richer interactive storytelling than simply making the model more permissive.
