Feedback on Voice Chat Language Selection

Hi Gemini Support Team,

I’m writing to you today as a big fan of Gemini and its capabilities. I’ve been exploring the voice chat features, and I’ve run into a bit of a limitation that I wanted to bring to your attention, hoping it might be something you can improve in the future.

My native language is Moroccan Arabic, also known as Darija. It’s a dialectal form of Arabic, and while Gemini handles it perfectly in text mode (which is fantastic!), I’ve noticed it’s not available as an option in the voice chat settings. The issue is that the voice chat only lets you select a maximum of two languages. If Darija (or any other language not selected) isn’t one of those two, Gemini simply doesn’t respond when I speak to it.

This is a bit frustrating because, as I mentioned, Gemini understands Darija perfectly well when I type it. It feels like the voice chat is artificially limited by this two-language selection. It makes it difficult to have a natural, flowing conversation if I have to constantly switch settings to speak in different languages, or if I want to use my native Darija.

I was recently trying out the advanced voice mode in ChatGPT, and I noticed that it automatically detects the language being spoken without requiring the user to pre-select anything. This feels so much more intuitive and user-friendly. It allows for a truly seamless multilingual experience.

I believe that adding automatic language detection, or at least expanding the number of selectable languages in voice chat, would significantly enhance Gemini’s usability, especially for multilingual users like myself. It would remove a barrier to communication and make the interaction feel much more natural. Adding the Moroccan Arabic (Darija) to the selectable languages list, is also crucial for me.

Thanks for your time and for creating such a powerful tool!

Real-time voice has challenges with multilingual support, especially with lesser known languages responses.

Technology is improving lighting fast, and i believe soon, real-time voice will work smoothly in multiple languages without issues.
