[Feature Request] Integrated In-Chat Drawing Scratchpad/Sketchboard to Enhance Visual Communication

Hello Google AI Team and fellow Developers,

I’m proposing a high-impact UX/UI feature that I believe would significantly improve user retention and the overall utility of Gemini for visual problem-solving.

The Current Problem: Context Switching Friction

Currently, users often need to explain concepts that are inherently visual (e.g., floor plans, simple diagrams, garment designs, quick flowcharts). Since they cannot explain it well with text, they frequently have to leave the Gemini interface, open a separate drawing app (like Paint or a notes app), create the sketch, save it, and then return to upload the image.

This process is highly disruptive and unproductive. Leaving the application increases the risk of users being distracted by external content, leading to loss of engagement.

The Proposed Solution: Integrated Drawing Scratchpad

My suggestion is to implement an optional drawing scratchpad (a simple digital whiteboard tool) accessible directly from the chat input bar.

1. New UI Element: A new “Draw” icon would be added to the input bar, next to the existing attachment/mic buttons.

2. The Drawing Interface: When activated, it opens a full-screen canvas with basic tools (pen, eraser, basic colors).

Upon completion, the drawing is sent as a simple image file directly into the chat, just like a standard uploaded photo.

Value & Impact for Google/Gemini

  • User Retention: This dramatically reduces the friction of context-switching, keeping users engaged within the Gemini interface.

  • Efficiency: It enables quick, on-the-fly visual communication, making Gemini a much more effective tool for visual problem-solving and collaboration.

  • Competitive Edge: Enhances the overall user experience by merging quick sketching capability with advanced multimodal AI interpretation.
