Do I need to pay to use the Gemini API on Android?

Hello, I’m trying to set up the demo app to use the Gemini API from an Android app, I live in the UK and it’s asking me for billing. Is this mandatory? Thanks

You need to have billing enabled, I think. There’s a free tier but I don’t believe UK is one of the countries where it is available. You will get a free trial credit of $300 to use for 3 months, though, which is enough for a demo app. Then, you can choose if you want to pay for using the API

Please refer to this FAQ from gemini documentation.

Paid models which include Gemini 1.5 Flash, Gemini 1.5 Pro, and Gemini 1.0 Pro. These models will not have a free tier available in the EEA (including EU), the UK and CH. Developers will have to go through the necessary steps to set up a billing account and pay for usage.
