Critical Regression: Enter Key Behavior Changed in AI Studio Chat Interface (Mobile & Desktop)

Hello Google AI Studio Team,

I am writing to report a critical regression in the Google AI Studio chat interface that significantly disrupts my workflow and makes it difficult to use the tool, especially for crafting multi-line prompts.

Problem Description:
The behavior of the Enter key has fundamentally changed, no longer allowing for new line creation but instead immediately sending/running the model. This is inconsistent across platforms and breaks the previous, more intuitive functionality.

Expected Behavior (Previous/Desired):

On PC (Desktop Browser):

Enter key: Should insert a new line (carriage return).

Shift + Enter (or Ctrl + Enter / Cmd + Enter): Should send/run the model.

On Mobile (Mobile Browser):

Enter key on the soft keyboard: Should insert a new line within the text input field.

A separate "Send" button: Should be used to send/run the model.

Actual Behavior (Current):

On PC (Desktop Browser):

Pressing Enter now immediately sends/runs the model, preventing multi-line input without complex workarounds (e.g., typing in an external editor and pasting).

On Mobile (Mobile Browser):

Pressing Enter on the soft keyboard now immediately sends/runs the model, making it impossible to add new lines within a prompt on mobile.

Steps to Reproduce:

Open Google AI Studio.

Navigate to any chat/prompt interface.

Type a single line of text.

On PC: Press Enter. Observe the model runs instead of a new line being inserted.

On Mobile: Press Enter on your soft keyboard. Observe the model runs instead of a new line being inserted.

Environment:

Device 1 (PC): Windows 11

Browser: Firefox, Opera GX, Chrome (last versions)

Device 2 (Mobile): Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

    Android 14, One ui 6.1

    Browser: Firefox

Impact:
This change significantly degrades the user experience and productivity. It’s now very difficult to format complex or multi-paragraph prompts, especially on mobile, where the previous behavior was essential. It forces users to either send incomplete prompts or use external text editors, which adds unnecessary friction. This is a regression that breaks fundamental text input expectations.

Please consider reverting this change or providing a clear option to configure Enter key behavior.

Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.

I’m genuinely so confused as to why they decided to do this. I cannot possibly imagine any world in which this is a good idea. This is someone crying for help because they’re drowning, and then when you walk over to look they are lying face down in a puddle and holding their water bottle upside down over their head
