In google drive I can check the version history and I downloaded the version I need. But it doesn’t recognise this file type when I upload it to the same folder and can’t open in AI studio.
I know if I just upload it as a json I can probably continue the conversation, but I’m looking to restore it properly being able to edit and regenerate previous messages etc

I don’t think the drive folder will recognise the uploaded one because its connected to AI Studio for autosave.
Are you getting this error “The current model doesn’t support files of this type.” while uploading the downloaded file??
What kind of restoration you are looking for like you want to upload same file in AI Studio or upload same file to Drive?? Can you please elaborate your feature request more so i can raise it further.

Basically there’s this conversation that I edited and regenerated, and I want to restore it to a previous state.
Since the history versions of the files are already stored in google drive anyway, maybe a way to import a json file as a conversion? Not just uploading it so the AI can read the file, but actually importing it as a chat so we can edit previous replies, regenerate part of it, etc.
