AI Studio GitHub Pull fails with “Failed to create snapshot: service is unavailable” in existing project

Hello Google AI Studio team,

I am experiencing a persistent GitHub synchronization problem with an existing Google AI Studio Build project.

Project: Aeroplane Ludo Game Engine
Applet ID: a95d81ff-f6cb-41df-a5b0-d1cd4a4bd72c
GitHub repository: thisisrk94/aeroplane-ludo-engine
Branch: main

Background

My original AI Studio project recently began returning:

“Your message exceeded the maximum number of tokens allowed.”

This happened even with a one-line prompt.

Google support explained that the accumulated chat/iteration history had exceeded the Build Agent’s input capacity and recommended starting a new chat within the same project.

I followed that recommendation.

Result: The new chat works correctly. I can send simple prompts and perform read-only inspection of existing project files.

Current GitHub synchronization problem

I have a real completed gameplay JSON archive containing 1,413 game-state records.

Attaching the JSON directly to AI Studio causes the token-limit error, so I committed the JSON directly to the project’s already-connected GitHub repository.

GitHub successfully received the commit:

Gameplay 3 Human vs AI.json

AI Studio then correctly detected:

“Changes in GitHub are ready to be pulled”

I clicked:

“Pull changes to Google AI Studio”

but AI Studio fails with:

“Failed to create snapshot: service is unavailable. Please try again later.”

I have tried the pull three times and receive the same error.

Expected behavior

Since the repository is already connected and AI Studio detects the external GitHub commit, I expect the existing AI Studio workspace to pull the GitHub change into the project.

Actual behavior

AI Studio detects the GitHub change but fails during the snapshot creation stage, preventing the pull from completing.

Important details

  • The GitHub repository is private and accessible.
  • The commit exists successfully on main.
  • AI Studio is still connected to the repository.
  • AI Studio successfully detects that changes are available to pull.
  • A fresh chat in the same original project works normally.
  • I have not created a Remix project.
  • I do not want to replace or recreate the original project.
  • The original AI Studio project and GitHub repository are both intact.

Could the team please investigate whether there is a problem with user snapshot creation / GitHub pull synchronization for this existing AI Studio workspace?

I can provide screenshots of the GitHub commit, AI Studio GitHub sync panel, and the exact error.

Thank you.

Hi @thisisrk94,

To help us investigate this snapshot error further, could you confirm a couple of details:

  1. Does the “Failed to create snapshot” error only occur when attempting to pull this specific JSON file?
  2. Have you tested pulling other files that were directly committed to GitHub to see if they sync successfully with AI Studio?

Hi Mahesh,

Thank you for following up. The issue has now been resolved — GitHub changes were successfully imported into my existing Google AI Studio project, and synchronization is working normally.

I had previously tested the same GitHub repository and other files, and the problem was specifically occurring during the GitHub pull/snapshot creation stage.

Since the issue is now resolved, no further investigation is required from my side. Thank you for your support.

Best regards,
Rajendra Kumar
