Unpopular opinion: Locking Gemini 4 Argon to Ultra was the right move (and the update is massive)

Looking at this board today, half the threads are people complaining that Argon isn’t included in entry-level Pro or free telecom bundles, or crying about 3.1 Pro being retired.

Let’s be realistic about compute costs. Gemini 4 Argon in agy is a massive step up from 3.8. The difference is night and day. As for the older models, I never touched them anyway, glad the clutter is gone. 3.8 Flash still works fine if you actually know how to prompt it and manage your context.

The reason Argon isn’t on Pro is simple: it would burn through a standard usage allowance in ten minutes. It’s a heavy frontier model, think Claude 5.5 Opus. Anyone using Opus knows you don’t run it in an agentic loop all day for basic edits. You use it for the heavy lifting and drop back to lighter models for the rest. If Google gave Pro users Argon, this entire forum would just be threads complaining about hitting quota limits after two prompts.

My immediate workflow was using Argon to plan and map the architecture, then switching to 3.8 Flash to actually implement it. A CEO doesn’t come up with the strategy and then sit there writing the boilerplate themselves. If your agent is stuck in a file-reading loop burning your quota, that’s a workflow issue, not a model issue.

I was getting disillusioned with Gemini over the past year and nearly jumped ship to Claude, but Argon completely changed my mind. I’m currently on mid-level Ultra and upgrading to the top tier because the output easily justifies the cost.

Props to the Antigravity team for shipping an actual frontier model. No matter what platform you use, if you want results on Argon’s level, you have to put your hands in your pockets.

it’s not just about the model…

it is how it is used by the application and Claude seems to use the models much better.
For the same tasks I found Claude code using less tokens and with less powerfull model produce outputs similar to pro models from google
