7/10/24 - first announcement post
Hey everyone!
If you’re wondering where I’ve disappeared to, this is what I’ve been hard at work doing!
I’m building this game for the Gemini API competition, and pretty much pouring my heart and soul into this.
It’s about time I actually started a progress thread here so people can actually check out my progress. And who knows, maybe it won’t stop at the competition?
Of course, I was going to ship a small “concept” demo so people can actually try it out, but there’s been a game-breaking bug I’ve been trying to fix, so y’all are gonna have to wait a couple days. I am going to ship something out this week though. I really want to get feedback from the community, and of course, see how much fun it is! I’m really excited with the progress I’ve been making so far.
Just be patient, trust, and ye shall soon see what Gemini 1.5-Flash can do in gaming.
The screenshot below is not going to be the final product for the competition (I’m working on the sprites after I fix my bug), but it ishow I’m whipping up the concept for everyone to test out and try. Pardon the shitty profiles, I doodled them in like, 10 minutes total lol. I will update them before shipping lmao.
Instead of pressing buttons to cast spells and abilities, you command each character’s “proxy” to cast a spell (or spells) for you. You also tell the proxy inside the command who your target is, to include multiple targets.
Be warned though: It’s not as simple as “cast Thundaga!” and it will obey. Each character’s Proxy will has their own “quirk”, or method/style it likes to be spoken to. Harold’s Proxy Inugami for example, only obeys requests to “fetch” things you want it to cast. Pieu’s Proxy requires you to be an a**hole to it. If you aren’t mean enough, it won’t obey your command. You cannot name the spell directly for any Proxy.
Proxies also have a mood. How their mood changes can vary slightly per Proxy, but it adds another layer of randomness to the game. If the Proxy’s mood is Angry for example, it might go berserk and accidentally attack the party. If the Proxy’s mood is Excited, it might choose a command that’s different than what was requested, but it will deal double the damage (or healing).
Don’t be fooled by the simplicity; it might look and sound straightforward, but it’s got quite a lot of heft to it. There’s a reason I disappeared for a couple months.
Rest assured, here’s my little nugget to you all, and if you check back within the next day or two, you’ll have something to play.
I’ll be updating this thread regularly from now on so you all can see my progress (and maybe get excited about it? maybe??).
P.S. I’ll also be in San Francisco Aug. 1-5, so if anyone is in SF and wants to meet, DM me so we can grab some coffee!
