Currently, Gemini displays reasoning processes only in English even when explicitly requested to reason in Korean. In contrast, Claude and DeepSeek provide reasoning in the user’s native language. This extends beyond mere convenience to a substantial collaboration efficiency issue. Native language reasoning enhances user comprehension, enabling more accurate feedback and course corrections, while reducing token usage by eliminating translation overhead, resulting in cost savings. Particularly in technical collaboration projects involving workflow automation and system design, Korean reasoning significantly improves development speed and accuracy. Could you please provide information on Gemini’s plans for multi-language reasoning support or explain the current technical constraints?
Hello
Welcome to the Forum,
Could you please clarify whether you are using Gemini API or AI Studio?
Hello,
Thank you for your response.
I have tested this in both environments:
-
Gemini Web Interface (gemini.google.com) - When I explicitly request reasoning in Korean through prompts like “한국어로 추론 과정을 보여주세요” (Please show the reasoning process in Korean), the model still displays its thinking process in English.
-
Gemini API - I’ve integrated Gemini API into my Emacs development environment and observed the same behavior. Even with Korean system prompts and explicit language instructions, the reasoning steps appear in English while the final response is correctly provided in Korean.
This contrasts with other models like Claude and DeepSeek, which can display their reasoning process in the user’s requested language. For technical collaboration workflows, having reasoning steps in the native language significantly improves comprehension and iteration speed.
Would appreciate any insights on whether this is a current limitation or if there are specific parameters/configurations that could enable multilingual reasoning display.
Best regards
