Random Endless \n Output in Gemini API 1.5 Pro Responses

I’m encountering a random issue when using the Gemini API 1.5 Pro. Occasionally, the API starts outputting endless newline characters (\n) until it reaches the configured max_output_tokens limit. This behavior occurs inconsistently and appears to happen during the same API call that usually works fine.

Hi @Jack_Kirby sometimes this happen with large language models when using high variable setting, you can do one thing try to reduce the temperature and top_p value and provide more explicit instructions in your prompt about the desired output format. Hope it’ll help.

Hello! I have been having this same issue. For me, the way to try to “jump over it” has been to implement a number of retries, and eventually one of evey 3-5 is alright. Hopefully they look into it, because i am trying to migrate from ChatGPT to Gemini but this makes it 100% unusable

EDIT: for me the error comes from using the gemini-2.0-flash model. I have tested different top k and temp, it seems like an arbitrary bug. It may be worth noting that this is for an Spanish client and I am making the model work in Spanish

I encountered the exact same issue. After some debugging, in my case at least, it seems Gemini can’t seem to return unicode or emojis in their coded form (e.g. \u2013). In our specific case, we were json_encoding our input params, and requesting a JSON via the response_schema.
In one specific free text field, it’d often try and quote the text of the input, and that’s where it’d fail when trying to return a coded character or emoji…the fact that it exhausts the maximum output tokens isn’t the root cause here.

Ensuring we were providing the unicode and emojis in their literal form fixed the issue, or as a workaround you could tell Gemini in the prompt to exclude these in the response.

In addition to my previous reply, the Gemini API response in certain contexts, fails to return accented characters such as é in names, and instead returns multiple /n

However, it’s not always the case, as changing the prompt input slightly can yield responses with accented characters.

Ive seen this many times when specifying strict JSON outputs, especially when feeding JSON in and mandating a different JSON out. I’ve defined a stop sequence of 5 ‘/n’ and if that fails; there’s a failsafe that runs while streaming that counts consecutive ‘/n’ and sends a stop signal. For me, if the JSON passes the checks we move on, if not it just regenerates.

I can’t share the full prompt, but this cut down example along the same theme consistently returns the max tokens error. I’ve just noticed that it’s not returning /n as per the last few days, but now \t continously when it tries to return the unicode character.

For other examples, where we include the literal form of emojis or characters such as ą and ° in the content text, and ask for the prompt to return those characters in the explanation, it sometimes can return the characters, but other times we observed the continuous /n at exactly the point where those characters are supposed to be.

As per previous comments, it’s likely something to do with requesting a JSON formatted response, and some kind of conflict when rendering non standard characters.

We made over a million requests this week to Gemini via Vertex generative models. We have about 30% responses with this reported problem (/t and/or /n until exhaustion). We have used 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5, same problem.

The problem may come from using a specific response schema.

I had the same issue. The model kept generating \n and \t infinitely until the max tokens. As a user here mentioned, the problem was with my prompt. My prompt had emojis and special unicode characters. So I created a function to clean the prompt before sending to the llm. After this I was not getting the issue anymore.

We are experiencing the same issue at least with Gemini 2.0 Flash in “structured output mode” (a.k.a. JSON response schema).

Our system instruction is a roughly 20k token Markdown document written in English, but also contains some conversation examples in German (with “umlaut” characters).

Whenever Gemini needs to emit umlaut characters in the response, there is a chance that it tries to escape the characters in strange ways.

For example, for the letter “ü”, we have encountered at least the following escaping attempts by Gemini:

  • \[u00df

  • [ü]

  • [uuml]

These unexpected escaping attempts are somewhat fixable in a post-processing step, but sometimes - as reported in this thread - Gemini emits endless newlines or tabs until it hits the output token limit. In some occasions, Gemini also stops emitting after a dozen of newlines/tabs and continues “normally” with the remaining response.

As @Sebastien_Fichot pointed out, this issue is related to the JSON output mode. Our workaround for now is to remove the expected JSON response schema and instruct Gemini to emit a custom XML-like format which we can parse afterwards. This is far from ideal and Gemini often deviates from the custom output format we instruct it to emit.
