Welcome to the forums! Great, and complicated, question that you ask.
You don’t really talk about the architecture that you currently have in place to use GPT, so I’m making a few assumptions. But they’re generally good things to think about regardless.
The good news is that much between the two is the same or similar:
- While the APIs aren’t exactly the same, they’re similar enough that you won’t be lost.
- If you’re using an abstraction layer such as LangChain, it hides many of the rough spots without hiding features.
- The most recent models have feature parity (at least) with things such as function calling, JSON mode, and system prompts. Older ones may not have the same feature set, so look closely.
There are a couple of things you need to keep in mind, however:
- The prompts won’t be the same. Take the time to experiment with tweaking your prompts for Gemini. Gemini tends to prefer examples over instructions.
- If you use embeddings (and it sounds like you might), keep in mind that they will be different.
- Hopefully you’ve structured your data store to allow for multiple embeddings and can transition between the two.
- If you haven’t - now might be a good time to think about that anyway. Embeddings will evolve over time, just like models do.
If you are looking into high volume - definitely consider evaluating and using Vertex AI instead. It has the Google Cloud Platform quite solidly behind it.
