If you share a google doc with Gemini 2.5 pro, write something in it, save the conversation and then reload the conversation, Gemini get’s a new copy of the google doc. It is easily replicable and could lead to data leaks if important data is written down in a shared document.
Is this not the intended behaviour? I would imagine sharing a doc should behave the same as if you shared a link with another person – whatever model/person/entity you “share” a document with should be able to see the most recent copy.
Hello,
Just to be clear, is this about Gemini application or AI studio?
Sorry the Gemini 2.5 pro model on aistudio.google.com
Perhaps it is but Gemini vehemently disagrees and states that is “Not how I work”
Hello,
Could you please specifiy how you are sharing the google doc with Gemini?
Sure, when I start a new chat I click the button in the dialog bar that has a plus, select the “My Drive” option and then click on the file I want to share. This is my default procedure as I am using Gemini as a spell check, grammar checker and sounding board for a writing project I’m working on.
Hello,
When you share the Google doc from drive to AI studio. it gets viewer access to your document. So whenever you edit your document, Gemini is able to read updated version.
But I will discuss your concern with our team internally and get back to you with more information.
Ok, but 1 Gemini doesn’t get a continuous updated stream, it doesn’t see new information when I add it, only under certain circumstances and 2 Gemini says that it can not see updates which would be a lie that someone who cares about document security would be told if they asked. And I asked Gemini in the same chat multiple times and it repeated said lie close to 10 times until I gave it irrefutable proof.
Could you please give me an example or may be step by step instructions of what you are trying to do, so that I can analyze this better?
Hopefully this is easily replicable. Step 1 start a new conversation on “https://aistudio.google.com/” with Gemini 2.5 pro (from the start screen and empty prompt box). Step 2 share a google doc with text (can’t see pictures) and ask it a question (preferably just ask it to repeat the text in the google doc). Step 3 save and close the conversation. Step 4 add new text to the google doc (A new final sentence or paragraph) step 5 reopen the conversation. step 6 refresh the google doc (close and open it again is what I did). Step 6 ask Gemini to type the new text IE “Rewrite the last paragraph” and boom it has access to the new text without having shared the update google doc. If you want you can also ask it “why did you omit that text the first time” and then when it gives you an answer akin to “that was an error on my part” you can tell it the true reason and it will say something like “It may look like that but I can not do that”. I hope this helps
Hello,
Thank you for the detailed information. This is the intended behavior, Gemini will have access to your Google Doc for session. Once the session is deleted, the access will be removed.
That’s not what happens at all, I save the session and when I return it gets a new copy of the document without any action on my part. The access isn’t “removed” it is enhanced
