Gemini Live API: WebSocket 1006 / INVALID_ARGUMENT before setupComplete — project-specific diagnosis requested

Hello Google Gemini API team,

We are investigating a persistent Gemini Live API failure affecting three AI speaking applications for Keiser University International Language Institute.

Observed behavior

  • Each application fails before receiving setupComplete.
  • The WebSocket closes with code 1006.
  • The surfaced error is: “Request contains an invalid argument.”
  • On October 16, 2026, the Google Cloud API metrics view filtered to six hours showed:
    • v1alpha.BidiGenerateContent: 38 requests; 44.74% errors
    • v1beta.BidiGenerateContent: 34 requests; 32.35% errors
    • Activity also included HTTP 200 and 409 responses.

Environment

  • Shared Google Cloud project: AI Speaking Apps
  • Project ID: gen-lang-client-07494010..
  • Tier: Free Tier
  • Generative Language API is enabled.

Troubleshooting already completed

  • Used the documented minimal Live API setup.
  • Tried an alternate model.
  • Tried a newer SDK.
  • The failure persists across all three applications.

We are reporting observations rather than asserting a root cause. Could Google please provide a project-specific diagnosis for why BidiGenerateContent/Live sessions are failing before setupComplete, including whether there is an eligibility, configuration, service-side, or other project-level condition we should address?

We can provide non-sensitive request identifiers or additional diagnostics privately if needed. We will not post API keys, credentials, or student data.

Thank you.
