I’m a paid Gemini API customer (Tier 1), but over the past few months the service has been surprisingly unreliable. Requests either sit in the queue indefinitely or freeze partway through generation/thinking, and it’s been especially bad with Gemini 3 Pro Preview. What’s most frustrating is that when I removed my API key in AI Studio and switched to the free plan, everything started working again, and it was noticeably smoother than the paid experience. How is the unpaid playground performing better than the paid API tier?
Just look at the screenshots. Top is the Paid tier; bottom is the Free tier. During peak loads—especially during East Asia peak hours (roughly 2 AM to 10 AM EDT)—my paid requests are stuck in the queue for over a minute, while the Free tier responds in under 10 seconds.
This has been a lingering issue ever since Gemini 3 Pro Preview went viral, but it’s been absolutely brutal the last few days. It is completely absurd that I am paying to get lower priority than free users. I never dealt with this kind of garbage back when I was using Gemini 2.5 Pro.
Google seems to be going crazy giving away massive amounts of free compute to pump their numbers without giving a damn about Quality of Service. The Google Developer forums are flooding with similar complaints, but the only ‘support’ we get are useless canned responses.
