Did Gemini 3.1 Pro make Google AI Studio paid?

Hi everyone,

After the Gemini 3.1 Pro rollout in Google AI Studio, I’m a bit confused.

I was using AI Studio completely free until last night, but today things feel different it showed me a text - You are out of free generations today.

You can still continue working on your app with Gemini by using your own API key

Did Google make AI Studio paid now?
Or is this happening only to some users / regions?

Would appreciate if someone from the team or community can clarify what exactly changed.

Thanks :folded_hands:

it mainly fails to work….

Same here… It seems like they’ve limited our usage with it, unfortunately… I was debating using the extended version by inserting billing info to unlock greater outside API limits, but now it won’t even load de billing info screen, while its hard limiting me with the usage.

I just started working on a personal tower defense browser game as a vibe code thing, but its now very annoying getting limited for no apparent reason, and with no widespread communication. Googling anything about it also doesn’t brings up any results other than this questions.

@TheChainWarden

There’s a notice at the top in AI studio. It says, “We’re rolling out major new updates to Build! Apologies for any temporary slowness or unexpected behavior while we actively upgrade the platform.Learn more

yeah and it’s not even clear what API costs will be if you give it a paid key for code generations.

if you’re using roo code or cline in vscode, you at least have some indication of what the per-change costs will be. here? who knows. could be $0.00001 or $10.00

something like Claude looks a lot better. I don’t mind paying for AIStudio because it does a lot for me, but without some prediction of costs, it’s insane to stay here, especially when it’s clear we’re in a beta test.

@St_Michael_the_Archa

I assumed that was only regarding outages and the AI not responding or looping in general - does that mean it’ll remain free as it’s always been when those issues get resolved?

If so, that’s great news, otherwise, quite sad news for me lol.
