Build - Exit status 254 - Gemini fails to find app's root directory

I’m having a constant issue when using Google Studio AI for a while now, where it constantly fails to find the app it’s working on.

A few scenarios:

  1. A lot of the time while working on a request, it will almost fail with this error - Build failed: exit status 254, and get ‘locked’ out of the app. It will then fail to find the root of the app, and spend a lot of the time trying to figure out where the ‘app/applet’ is, and continually needing to restart the dev server.

  2. Sometimes it will successfully complete a task, and even respond, but I won’t see the response (only if I click Show Details). Instead, it will continue to run until it hits an internal error, or it gets disconnected with 254 again. I then have to click ‘Retry’ and it tries to find the root of the app again, and restarts the dev server.

At the moment, I spend more time waiting for it to find the root of the app, and restarting the dev server than actually working on the app.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

From what I can tell, it seems that the AI gets consistently disconnected while trying to work on the app, which is what’s causing it to no longer find any files available suddenly, and having to restart the app each time. I’m wondering if there’s a possible solution where it can download a cached version of the app to wherever the AI resides, in its own container, or a more bulletproof solution where it can’t be disconnected? I’m not sure how the structure is setup, or how it’s possible for the AI to be locked out in this way.

Please try the below steps:

  • In the chat panel on the left of your project in Google AI Studio, click “Start new chat” to reset the chat session while keeping your application files intact.
  • If such issues seem persistent in a specific applet, the fastest way to solve it is by creating a remix version of the app.
  • If you are still facing this issue after trying the above steps, please share your Applet ID (from the https://aistudio.google.com/apps/drive/<applet_id> URL).

Thanks for those suggestion. Unfortunately I have already tried the first two points a few times now. The app I’m working is already a second remix, and I’ve tried starting new chats but it’s the same issue.

It’s over half hour now trying to figure out why there is no package.json, and why there are no files visible despite trying to re-start the dev server, which seems ridiculous. I’ve only managed to do one prompt so far. I’m also using the latest 3.8 Flash model.
