I am using Gemini api free version. How would I know when my free quota has ended? And would it start billing me automatically? How would I know if I am getting charged for using it or not?

If you are using a free key from AI Studio - then you won’t get billed as long as you use that key. You will know when you have hit the temporary quota because the API will return a 429 error.
If you are using either a key that you have attached a billing account to in AI Studio, or using Vertex AI, then you will be billed.
Google does not automatically switch your account - you will need to take explicit action to switch a key from free to paid.
