Title: [Feature Req Asynchronous Cloud Agent Sessions with Multi-Surface Handoff & Git Integration
Category: Feature Requests / Agent Tooling
Problem Statement
Current developer-facing coding agents (e.g., local CLI tools, IDE extensions) remain tightly coupled to the client machine’s execution lifecycle. If a long-running, multi-step task—such as a large-scale repository refactor, framework migration, or full-suite regression fix—is initiated, the developer must keep their local workstation awake and connected. Closing the laptop terminates or suspends the agent loop.
Furthermore, monitoring progress or answering intermediate disambiguation prompts requires staying tethered to the desktop workstation, preventing seamless mobile or web handoffs.
Proposed Solution: Asynchronous Cloud Agent Sessions
Introduce a cloud-backed execution runtime for autonomous coding agents (similar to Anthropic’s Claude Code “Cloud Sessions”), enabling tasks to run decoupled from local client state.
Core Architecture & Workflow
- Isolated Cloud Sandboxes:
- Agent executes within an ephemeral, secure container/VM pre-configured with common runtimes, build tools, and package managers.
- Ability to provision custom environments via initialization scripts or container definitions for team/enterprise setups.
- Git & Repository Integration:
- Direct GitHub/GitLab integration via OAuth/App permissions.
- Agent pulls a designated branch into the isolated runner, checks out a working branch, performs modifications, runs tests/linters, and commits changes independently.
- Multi-Surface Session Handoff:
- Persistence: Session execution state is hosted entirely in the cloud. The developer can initiate a session from their IDE or terminal, close their machine, and let the agent continue working.
- Mobile / Web Steering: A companion interface (web console or mobile app) receives notifications when the agent hits interactive decision points, allowing the developer to inspect diffs, approve tool calls, or steer prompts remotely.
- Local Resumption / Teleport: A CLI flag (e.g.,
gemini session attach <session-id>orteleport) allows pulling the cloud branch, diff, and session history back down to the local machine when returning to the desk.
- Autonomous PR Creation & CI Polling:
- Once execution criteria are met, the agent opens a Pull Request directly from the cloud environment and can optionally monitor failing CI status checks to propose corrective commits.
Key Technical & Enterprise Requirements
- Determinism & Sandbox Isolation: Strict egress controls and ephemeral disk lifecycle to ensure tenant code privacy and zero leakage across sessions.
- Granular Tool Authorizations: Configurable permissions determining which operations (file write, terminal execution, network access) can run fully autonomously versus requiring user intervention.
- Resource Optimization: Integration with Google Cloud runtimes (e.g., Cloud Run or Vertex AI custom jobs) for elastic billing and execution timeouts.
User Impact
Decoupling long-running agent workflows from physical hardware eliminates developer idle time, accelerates asynchronous team workflows, and provides a true mobile-first review mechanism for autonomous code generation.
